Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 7, 2024 It has been a few years, and perhaps nobody really missed it, but I've decided to revive my tracking of former sekitori. It'll be done as a standalone thread this time, rather than tacked on to others. Previously the introductory posts were in each basho's banzuke release thread, the daily results - only from Day 8 onwards - in the Promotion/Demotion discussions. I'll endeavour to cover the results across the full tournament in this version. For some posting practice I'll start by filling in the 2024 results with each basho's "Day 0" and Day 15 tables, with Aki also getting the daily posts to test that out ahead of Kyushu. For space reasons not all information will be included on all tables. Feedback welcome, especially in regards to which data is getting shown at which points in time (too much / too little, etc.), but also anything else you may want to share. 5
Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 7, 2024 Hatsu 2024 No former sekitori retired after Kyushu 2023, so the only lineup changes were via promotion and demotion. Up: Hakuyozan (straight return), Tochimusashi (after 4 basho) Down: Hakuoho (after 5 sekitori basho, including time in makuuchi), Takakento (after 8 basho), Hitoshi (straight demotion), Azumaryu (after 8 full years) That resulted in 33 rikishi on the list for Hatsu, although Azumaryu proceeded to retire before the tournament began. An additional four rikishi ended up not competing in the basho. Anniversaries of these rikishi's last salaried appearances: One year for Kaisho and Terutsuyoshi, two years for Chiyonoo. Birthdays in the period since the last honbasho: December: 5th: Fujiseiun (26) 6th: Wakatakakage (29) 16th: Nionoumi (37) 30th: Daiseiryu (31) January: 11th: Chiyonoumi (31) 17th: Terutsuyoshi (29) 28th: Kaisho (29) "Out" and "Last J" show how many basho it has been since each rikishi's last sekitori appearance, by time passed and by tournament date respectively. HiRk lists the highest rank achieved (if in makuuchi, the shikona field will also indicate it in a darker blue), M# and J# are the respective number of tournaments spent in the two salaried divisions. In addition, the most recent three tournament results are shown. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 7, 2024 Back in Hatsu 2022, Chiyoarashi set an all-time record by earning a return to juryo after more than 8 years of unsalaried status. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 7, 2024 Six rikishi (Keitenkai aside) did not compete in Haru basho, and one of them even retired: On the way down to unsalaried status, Terutsuyoshi had become one of the rare cases of a rikishi falling from makuuchi to makushita in two tournaments while fighting all 30 matches. Unable to halt the descent during a year of makushita action, the intai decision was arguably not that much of a surprise. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 7, 2024 Nagoya 2024 Up: Fujiseiun (after 5 basho) Out: Kotoeko Down: Oshoumi (after 3 basho), Chiyomaru and Kazekeno (straight demotion for both) Up by one rikishi to 32 former sekitori for this basho. At least on the banzuke, anyway - this time two rikishi retired between tournaments: Chiyonoumi, a juryo regular from mid-2018 to mid-2021, decided to quit just shy of a year after his last salaried appearance, while Oki featured in the paid ranks just once and unfortunately left them with the ultimate indignity of a 0-15 record. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 8, 2024 (edited) Day 15 new KK: Tochitaikai, Nabatame, Nionoumi new MK: Daishomaru, Asagyokusei, Fujiazuma, Asashiyu, Dairaido, Daiseiryu Not a great overall outcome in the 9 KK/MK deciders. The three in the top five ranks all had to go against juryo opponents, with Nabatame and Tochitaikai both defeating sekitori newcomer Kiryuko in succession to clinch their kachikoshi and a return to the paid ranks, while veteran Daishomaru fell short against another promotee of the previous tournament, Oshoumi. Down in sandanme the yusho went to Kawazoe, and Enho secured another sizable jump by finishing 6-1 in upper jonidan. Yoshiazuma ended a tournament with 5 wins for the first time in two and a half years, but was one rank too low to earn a return to sandanme with that. Chiyonoo's 4-3 is his third straight, while Kitaharima has gone 1-6 back to back. Injury returnees Takakento, Tochimaru and Tochimusashi have posted matching 5-2 records. No retirements during the two weeks of action for a change, but after the tournament it became known that short-time sekitori (2 and 3 basho respectively) Kotoyusho and Daiseiryu were hanging up their mawashi, with Kotoyusho being accepted into a wakaimonogashira position for continued Kyokai employment. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 8, 2024 Kyushu 2024 Up: Tochitaikai and Nabatame (straight returns), Chiyomaru (after 2 basho) Out: Kotoyusho, Daiseiryu Down: Asanoyama (after two years as sekitori since his previous comeback from suspension), Kiryuko (straight demotion), Chiyosakae (after 9 basho) That gives us 29 former sekitori on the Kyushu banzuke, the fewest since Natsu 2023. Akua is ranked in the makushita top 5 for the fourth straight tournament, the first rikishi to do so in almost two years. (The most recent ones were Tochitaikai - then still Tsukahara - and Fujiseiun, both from 2022.09 to 2023.03. Tsukahara ended up getting demoted to Ms10, while Fujiseiun earned his juryo debut.) Kaisho returns to the promotion zone for the first time in 7 tournaments, and Chiyonoo is back in the makushita top 15 for the first time in 8. Takakento has moved up above Ms15 as well, as the first of a gaggle of recent sekitori battling back from injury that also includes Tochimaru, Tochimusashi, Kawazoe and Enho. Speaking of whom, Enho's Aki 6-1 didn't quite get him to sandanme 50, so he will require the full 7 wins to get to makushita for January. Asashiyu has dropped to sandanme "the regular way" for the first time in his eight-year career; previous trips to the fourth division were all due to injury-related full kyujo for the former sandanme tsukedashi starter. Time seems to be running out for the 30-year-old... Last sekitori appearance anniversaries: One year for Hitoshi and Takakento, three for Kyokutaisei, four for Fujiazuma. Birthdays: October: 18th: Enho (30) and Kyokutaisei (35) 31st: Kiryuko (22) November: 6th: Akua (34) We'll be starting the tournament with no less than five list members on the sidelines: Asanoyama (off since Nagoya Day 5), Chiyosakae (withdrew Aki Day 4), Chiyonoo, Kyokutaisei and Yago (off since the start of Nagoya) are all not on the Day 1/2 schedules. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 11, 2024 (edited) Day 2 - Results Wins all around in sandanme and below, but a very mixed bag of results all across makushita despite only two ex-sekitori going head to head (Kawazoe defeated Asanowaka). Kiryuko won on Day 1 and then got called in for juryo duty on Day 2, where things didn't go as well. Yuma, Kitaharima, Asagyokusei and Amakaze, who had all lost four in a row to close out their Aki campaigns, started off Kyushu victoriously. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 13, 2024 (edited) Day 4 - Results The round started off with some highly unexpected news in the form of Kawazoe going kyujo; the reason remains a mystery at this time, as nothing has been announced and his Day 2 bout had given off no indications of anything being wrong. With Kiryuko's second match done early, the highest-ranked participants for Day 3 were Kaisho and Kotokuzan, and they faced off head-to-head with the victory going to Kotokuzan. Fellow top 5 ranker Akua was also successful to keep his promotion hopes going. The only remaining top 15 candidate for a possible 7-0 promotion is Kazekeno after today, ranked just below Ms5, while Yuma joins us as a lower-ranked yusho contender for now. In further news: Takakento defeated Tenshoho in the extended Ms joi, and Enho prevailed over veteran Dairaido in sandanme. Another oldie, Yoshiazuma, is 2-0 and on course to earn promotion to sandanme for the first time in five tournaments. And finally, some odd trivia. In his most recent 12 bouts (going back to the last three from Nagoya), Daishomaru has posted these results: OOO XXX OOO XXX. I suppose it's time for a win, then. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 15, 2024 Day 6 - Results Makushita rikishi fighting up in juryo are having a hard time this basho and remain winless after six attempts (okay, five, one was a fusenpai), and among them, Kaisho became the second loser with sekitori experience of his own on Day 5. Kotokuzan and Kazekeno were the two highest-ranked 2-0 competitors, so something/someone had to give in round 3. In this case it was Kotokuzan, so Kazekeno remains alive in his quest for another 7-0 and is now the (by rank) nominal top contender for it. Yuma was also successful, but is only the 5th-highest 3-0 and so these two should only be seeing each other in round 6, should they both actually get there at 5-0. Meanwhile, Enho and Yoshiazuma also moved on to 3-0 in their respective lower divisions. The active quartet in the top 5 promotion zone was wiped out altogether in this round with Kiryuko and Akua joining the aforementioned Kaisho and Kotokuzan with losing efforts. The rest was the usual mixed bag of victories and defeats, including one more head-to-head clash in which Tochimaru prevailed over Tsushimanada. Daishomaru and Asanowaka have dropped three straight and will be the first ex-sekitori fighting to avoid makekoshi this basho. Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 17, 2024 Day 8 - Results Kotokuzan was up for two matches in this block, and after losing to last basho's makushita yusho winner Hatsuyama he proceeded to become the first victorious makushita visitor to juryo today, sending veteran Chiyomaru to an early 0-8 makekoshi. Kiryuko and Kaisho faced off in the promotion zone, with the better end for recently demoted Kiryuko. Akua improved his record to 2-2 to barely keep his promotion chances alive; a 4-3 from his rank looks unlikely to be sufficient this basho. The battle for promotion is running at snail's pace altogether though, both among the ex-sekitori and otherwise - the nine active competitors in the top 5 ranks feature no less than four 1-3 records plus one 0-4 already. Non-top 5 Kazekeno continues to make a promotion case of his own and is kachikoshi now after defeating Kaiseijo, so at minimum he'll have an opportunity to earn a return to juryo next time. His next opponent will be Otsuji, a promising 21-year-old upper makushita regular. Yuma fell out of the zensho race with a loss to recent MsTd Mita. Down in sandanme it was also KK time for Enho as he attempts to get from jonokuchi to makushita in the minimum time of three basho, while Yoshiazuma dropped away from the jonidan lead group. Daishomaru is our unfortunate first member to be officially makekoshi (the five kyujo aside), although it's true in practical terms for Kawazoe as well, at 1-0-3 and missing from the next round's torikumi for another absence mark. Besides Kiryuko-Kaisho this session featured another head-to-head meeting among list members, in which Hitoshi prevailed over Tenshoho. These are full of nostalgia, memories, sadness of a kind and just great way to follow them. I am sure millions of forum visitors share my view and only a baby handful who don¨t. Even Dairaido...such a beast with aggressive sumo. I had forgotten him but promise to never forget him again as long as brain is not bad. Thank you for your effort. Yoshiazuma! Asashosakari 19,651 Posted November 19, 2024 Day 10 - Results new KK: Tochimaru, Tochimusashi, Fujiazuma, Asashiyu new MK: Kaisho, Asanowaka, Amakaze Kazekeno and Enho marched on in their respective yusho campaigns. Their next challengers will be Hokutomaru, who recently made an abortive push for the top 5 ranks before falling back to more familiar mid-division ground, and high school newcomer Noda. One win and two losses in the top 5 in this round: Kiryuko improved to 3-2 and will have two shots at securing a very strong, maybe certain, promotion case over the next five days, starting with a direct clash with Kotokuzan tomorrow (who may need to win this and his final match). Akua lost and dropped to 2-3, and can probably only aim for kachikoshi and a better starting point than Ms5 for January now. Kaisho fell to makekoshi and is out of the running altogether, ending a string of 5 straight KK tournaments. The Kasugano duo of Tochimaru and Tochimusashi (victory over Yuma today) successfully continue their returns from deep tumbles down the banzuke; fellow injury returnee Takakento missed out on his kachikoshi today. KK also for Asashiyu, who will return to makushita for the new year, as well as Fujiazuma who has avoided the trip to sandanme much more decisively this time than he did two months ago (which IMHO was undeserved). Amakaze picked up his fourth straight loss since opening the basho with a win and won't be returning to makushita for now, and struggling Asanowaka sadly looks more likely to join the sandanme crowd than getting back to juryo anytime soon. Daishomaru lost again and at 0-5 he's now certain to drop heavily. It won't be the first time that he's losing touch with the promotion zone since he dropped from juryo two and a half years ago, but of course his advancing age makes it increasingly doubtful that we'll see another comeback in 2025.
