Asashosakari Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 Day 2 - Results A pretty meh start with 15 wins and 17 losses, the undesirable results including both visits to juryo (by Kitanowaka and Akua, respectively). Tochimusashi also picked up a loss in the promotion zone, while Otsuji and Kotokuzan had a good start. The first eliminations from the extended promotion zone's zensho hopefuls hit Daishoho and Tochimaru. The latter appeared to dislocate his left kneecap (ugh) as he was pushed off to the ground by Nishinoryu. He managed to put it back in place himself (double ugh) and was able to step back onto and then off the dohyo, but was moving somewhat gingerly. One of the two lower-ranked injury returnees joined Kitanowaka in defeat, as Bushozan unfortunately ran right into major prospect Ikarigata for his first bout back. Shimazuumi was more successful and began his comeback with a white star. Last basho's big 6-1 and 7-0 movers from lower ranks were mostly victorious; only Kawazoe failed to join Enho, Asanoyama and Asagyokusei on the winning side. Dairaido's last-ditch "not falling to jonidan" campaign started with a win, while jonidan (sadly) regular Yoshiazuma lost his opening bout for the first time in six tournaments. Asashosakari Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 Day 4 - Results The mehness continued with a combined score of 15-15 in round two. A quartet of matches took place among our ex-sekitori, including a walkover victory for Daishoho over Tochimaru, whose post-bout knee issues from Day 2 are presumably to blame. A potentially crucial head-to-head within the promotion zone saw victory by Otsuji over Kotokuzan. The latter is 1-1, and so is Kitanowaka after turning his fortunes around from his shonichi loss. Tochimusashi dropped to 0-2 and being ranked at the bottom of the promotion zone he's already looking at an uphill battle to promotion, as 4-3 is unlikely to be enough (and quite possibly even 5-2 won't be). Our early contenders for the makushita yusho include Otsuji, Enho, Takakento, Tenshoho, Daishomaru and Yago, but surprisingly not Asanoyama after an unexpected loss today. The only 2-0 rikishi outside of makushita is the equally surprising Dairaido. In other quick news: Returned Shimazuumi and Bushozan were both defeated in this round of matches, and Chiyomaru (loss to Enho) joined Asanoyama in dropping out of the promotion race. Tochimaru has ended up withdrawing ahead of Day 5/6 altogether, so apparently his issues were not treatable with just a couple of extra days rest. We'll see if he does come back later on. Asashosakari Posted May 16 Author Posted May 16 (edited) Day 6 - Results It continues to be a fairly tough basho for the ex-sekitori crowd, in this round with just 11 wins against 19 defeats. The losses included Enho, Daishomaru and Dairaido bowing out of their respective yusho and/or promotion races, as well as two more fusenpai - Kawazoe's wasn't a big surprise after his knee buckled in his Day 3 bout and he had to take the wheelchair (arguably the surprise was that he was on the Day 5/6 schedules in the first place), but Fujiazuma's withdrawal wasn't really indicated by anything in his most recent match (on Day 4). Our top two members ranked at Ms1 were matched up yesterday, and Akua prevailed over Kitanowaka with his trusty kakenage. Kitanowaka's in a bit of a bind at 1-2 now, although of course he does only need 4 wins to get promoted. Akua likely just needs to win half his remaining bouts from 2-1, and another top 5 contender is also in great shape with Otsuji at 3-0. Kotokuzan improved his score to 2-1, but from down at Ms4w he likely needs three more victories for a promotable case. Further down, there's Takakento who can still hope for a zensho promotion from the extended promotion zone. Tenshoho and Yago are too far down for that, but they remain in the makushita yusho race alongside Otsuji and Takakento. Tochimusashi dropped to 0-3 and although KK is still possible, any promotion hopes are almost certainly over already. Comebackers Shimazuumi and Bushozan both suffered defeats in round three, and especially the latter now has to be more concerned with avoiding a drop to sandanme than he can be with making any progress back towards juryo. In slightly better news Asanowaka ended a 7-bout losing streak down in sandanme. Shortly after I had posted the summaries up to Day 4, news came down that Hokutofuji is in fact retiring immediately. Asashosakari Posted May 21 Author Posted May 21 (edited) Day 8 - Results new KK: Otsuji new MK: Tochimaru, Kawazoe, Fujiazuma Another not so great round with 12 wins and 16 losses. Four of our ex-sekitori had the opportunity to collect the straight kachikoshi, but only upper-ranked Otsuji managed to do so, while Takakento, Tenshoho and Yago all fell out of the makushita yusho race (and the first one of them also out of consideration for a promotion to juryo). Meanwhile, all three makekoshi were ticketed by rikishi who have been sidelined in the course of the tournament. I suppose it's slightly encouraging that there hasn't been any true 0-4 despite the broadly disappointing results of this basho. Up in the promotion zone Kitanowaka and Kotokuzan managed to join Otsuji in winning, to leave themselves a likely two wins away from promotion. Akua is in the same situation after a loss. Tochimusashi avoided makekoshi for now to keep some semblance of hope for a continued stay in the promotion zone. The extended zone down to Ms15 saw less promising results with heavyweight veterans Daishoho (against Kitanowaka) and Chiyomaru dropping to 1-3 and Enho also being defeated. Asanoyama was the only winning ex-sekitori in that area, defeating Kitaharima, and retains a shot at making it into the top 5 ranks for July. Both low-ranked injury returnees Shimazuumi and Bushozan scored victories on Day 7, but at 2-2 and 1-3 it's hardly the comeback they were likely hoping for. Even further down in makushita it's matching 1-3 scores for Asagyokusei and Nionoumi, who thus have to worry about a ticket to sandanme being handed to them soon. The present sandanme denizens aren't doing all that well altogether, with Dairaido's 2-2 record the highlight. Yoshiazuma down in jonidan also stands at 2-2. Asashosakari Posted May 21 Author Posted May 21 (edited) Day 10 - Results new KK: Asanoyama, Daishomaru new MK: Tochimusashi, Daishoho, Asagyokusei 14 wins and 14 losses are tying this round for the best overall performance with Days 3/4, which is exactly as depressing as it sounds. Things were particularly bad in the upper range occupied by our former sekitori bunch - the 16 rikishi ranked Ms30 and better posted a line of 5-11. The only promotion zoner to win was Otsuji, and at 5-0 he is presenting a very good case for an immediate return back to salaried status. The makushita yusho remains in reach for him as well, of course. Kitanowaka, Akua and Kotokuzan are now faced with a serious uphill battle that leaves them in need of winning both remaining bouts, and makekoshi Tochimusashi is saying goodbye to the top 5 altogether. Daishoho, who had narrowly missed out on a spot in the coveted five highest ranks, is also headed down. Third straight win and kachikoshi for Asanoyama, making sure that he'll at minimum be a little closer to juryo in two months' time, but the real prize - promotion to a rank where he won't need a 7-0 to get to juryo next time - will require two more shiroboshi for a 6-1 finish. On the other hand it was a third consecutive loss for Enho, this time on a very close mono-ii decision; he needs those two wins now just to finish KK at all. Fellow top division alum Chiyomaru is ranked between Enho and Asanoyama and avoided makekoshi for now. Daishomaru already looked better (if not exactly back to sekitori form) last basho, and his resurgence continues with an early KK in this one. Maybe he's got something left in the tank after all, which was hardly to be expected after he'd lost almost 40 ranks in the span of three tournaments, but of course it's going to be a long way back to relevance from outside Ms30. That same road is proving far from easy to traverse for Yago, who has dropped from 3-0 to 3-2 over the last few days. Shimazuumi and Bushozan both won again, however, and can still hope to finish the basho in positive territory. That's no longer the case for Asagyokusei who lost for the fourth straight time to pick up the makekoshi. Dairaido improved his score to 3-2 and just might be avoiding that trip to jonidan after all. All others outside of makushita have 2-3 records now. Kawazoe has declared his return to action in the next round after three bouts out. Asashosakari Posted May 22 Author Posted May 22 (edited) Day 12 - Results new KK: Kotokuzan, Takakento, Tenshoho, Shimazuumi, Chiyonoo, Dairaido new MK: Akua, Enho, Chiyomaru, Yuma, Tsushimanada, Asashiyu, Bushozan, Nionoumi, Amakaze, Yoshiazuma Above-average results! Which in this tournament means 15 wins and 14 losses. Sigh. As you can see it didn't stop the makekoshi avalanche in any case, although the charitable interpretation is that the guys who are not makekoshi must have done pretty well in this round, and in fact they did to the tune of 13-2. The two losses marred the records of Daishomaru (now 4-2) and Yago (3-3 with three straight defeats). Yago lost that bout to Chiyonoo; two other head-to-head clashes took place with makekoshi on the line, in which Kaisho beat Tsushimanada and Kitaharima prevailed over Chiyomaru. The big news of Day 12 was arguably Enho falling to MK in a very hard-fought but ultimately losing effort. The last two banzuke-making sessions saw 3-4 records at Ms10 getting dropped out of the top 15 to accommodate pretty borderline kachikoshi scores, so there's a good chance that Enho will not be in line for even a 7-0 promotion in July and his hoped-for return to salaried status cannot happen before November now. Maybe he'll get more lucky than those other Ms10's did... Speaking of which, the guy struck by the "be gone from the zone!" hammer two months ago was Gojinyu who entered this round at 5-0 and gave our top performer ex-sekitori Otsuji a big fight as part of the makushita yusho race on Day 11. Otsuji narrowly prevailed at the tawara in the end and has all but clinched his return to juryo, with perhaps the ¥ 500,000 yusho bonus sweetening the deal tomorrow. Two other former sekitori are also still in the hunt for promotion. Kitanowaka stared down makekoshi in his Day 11 visit to the juryo torikumi, winning a tough battle against shin-juryo Mita to give himself a chance to finish the tournament with 4 wins and a certain promotion. Kotokuzan already has those 4 wins now, but he will almost definitely need a fifth and even that may not be enough from Ms4w when all is said and done. Meanwhile the repromotion campaign ended for Akua, who fell to makekoshi. One more win may yet keep him in the top 5, however; he's facing fellow 2-4 Tochimusashi for that tomorrow. An even worse score at a single-digit rank is held by 1-5 Daishoho - he grinded to a 4-3 in March to make some amends for his 1-14 disaster from Hatsu basho, but now it's gonna be another big demotion (likely to outside the top 15 even if he wins his last match). Even though Daishoho's still only 30 years old I'm probably far from the only one who is starting to have severe doubts about his potential to stage a return to the paid ranks. A year ago he was ranked J2w - since then he has posted a combined line of 26-62. In other news: Asanoyama is 5-1 and will face the aforementioned Gojinyu to decide which one of them gets into - or at least very close to - the Nagoya top 5. Ailing Kawazoe returned to action but was easily pushed out of the dohyo to remain winless. The two low-makushita injury returnees will move in opposite directions with Shimazuumi KK after today and Bushozan on an unexpected makekoshi. Dairaido secured his kachikoshi and will get to stay in the sandanme division, while Yoshiazuma is headed downwards in jonidan again. Fujiazuma is re-joining the field for the final round of matches. Asashosakari Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 (edited) Argh, fallen behind on this again...let's wrap up Natsu basho quickly before moving on to Nagoya. Day 15 - Results new KK: Yago, Chiyosakae new MK: Kitanowaka, Kitaharima, Kaisho, Asanowaka Yusho for Otsuji, and the decision of who would get to join him on the way up to juryo involved a shin-juryo Miyanokaze double feature: On Day 13 he prevailed over injury returnee Kitanowaka and sent him to makekoshi, two days later he was defeated by Kotokuzan. Miyanokaze ended up staying in juryo quite luckily anyway, but Kotokuzan narrowly snatched the second available spot, earning a return to the paid ranks after just over two years. The other two returned ex-sekitori also ended their basho on a down note. Shimazuumi at least had kachikoshi in hand already, but the minimum 4-3 will not be providing all that much progress back towards juryo, and Bushozan dropped to 2-5 and is even headed to sandanme for July. He's joined on the way to the fourth division by Nionoumi, while nobody is coming back up to makushita. Asashosakari Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 (edited) Nagoya 2025 Up: Otsuji (after one basho), Kotokuzan (after 13 basho) Down: Wakanosho (after two basho), Mudoho (straight demotion after his debut) Out: Hokutofuji, now Oyama-oyakata, after a 10-year career of which almost 9 were spent as sekitori Nobody earned a juryo debut after Natsu so the up/down numbers are identical, and thus Hokutofuji's departure marks the only change in the ex-sekitori lineup size; we're entering the new IG Arena with 32 guys who are more or less hopeful of earning a paycheck again in the near future. It's an almost all-new promotion zone lineup at least from our vantage point. Otsuji, Kotokuzan and Hokutofuji are elsewhere now, Akua and Tochimusashi dropped out of the top 5 ranks with their respective MK scores, and only previously top-ranked Kitanowaka stayed in. Ms3w is still a pretty useful position to be in, but with the recent favouring of juryo incumbents I wouldn't advise him to finish below 5-2 if he wants to get promoted this time around. He's joined by Asanoyama - quite lucky to jump all the way to Ms1w on his 6-1 - and Takakento who grabbed the very last spot, as well as demoted Mudoho at Ms2w. Wakanosho's injury-marred Natsu basho ended so early that the missed bouts took him all the way past Ms5, but he does at least participate in Nagoya basho. That's not true for Kiryuko, unsurprisingly, as the timetable for his return from knee/leg surgery never mooted Nagoya as possible, and often-injured Kawazoe is also found on the sidelines once more. As expected, Enho and Chiyomaru narrowly did not hang on to spots in the extended top 15 promotion zone. Nobody earned a promotion into that 6-15 area either, so it's just Wakanosho, Akua and Tochimusashi who can hope to grab a ticket to juryo with a zensho record. Having just four ex-sekitori in the top 5 ranks isn't hugely unusual (happened twice in 2024 and three times in 2023), but having only 7 in the full top 15 certainly is - the lowest amount in the current decade has been 8, most recently in Natsu 2022, and for anything lower we have to go back all the way to Natsu 2013 when there were just 6. Nagoya was the place of three former sekitori's most recent appearance in the salaried ranks: Tsushimanada lost his spot last year, Yago three years ago, and Nionoumi a whopping 12 years back. Asashosakari Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 Day 2 - Results Not a great kickoff at the new place with 13 wins (including a fusensho for Bushozan) against 18 losses. Asanoyama narrowly prevailed over Mudoho on shonichi, then lost in a juryo visit against Kotokuzan today. To be fair, from Ms1w he can afford that loss for now. That's much less true for everybody else in the promotion zone, and in fact the list of rikishi who can still hope to go up with a 7-0 is already down to one single name: Wakanosho. He might actually have a great shot, too, especially with Asanoyama out of his way already. We'll see if he's fighting at juryo strength or if last basho's injury is still limiting his effectiveness. Today's bout looked a bit inconclusive to me, but of course none of his potential opponents en route to the yusho are going to be pushovers in any case. Three rikishi are occupying spots just outside the top 15, and two of them were matched up on Day 2 with Tenshoho defeating Chiyomaru. Enho, for his part, also took an early loss, so even getting to the top 5 for September may be an uphill battle. Daishoho brought in the longest losing streak from Natsu, but yesterday he finally won again after five unsuccessful outings. Similarly, Akua has come in with four straight defeats from last time and he wasn't as lucky. Lengthy winning streaks were held by Asanoyama with 5 (you already know how that has gone) and Chiyonoo with 4 - he lost as well. Down in sandanme: Dairaido, Asanowaka and Amakaze are all ranked low enough that they may not even be able to afford a 3-4 makekoshi if they don't want to go to jonidan. The first two of these were paired up yesterday, with Dairaido on the winning side. Amakaze joined Asanowaka in losing his opening bout. Asashosakari Posted July 18 Author Posted July 18 (edited) Day 4 - Results A better day overall with a combined score of 17-13, but in terms of possible promotions to juryo we're in worse shape than before. Mudoho took a pair of losses and has a major uphill battle ahead of himself at 0-3, while Takakento dropped to 0-2 - from their respective ranks, both may not even be slam dunk promotion contenders if they win all remaining bouts. Asanoyama was off duty, having had his round two match back on Day 2 already, and that left only Kitanowaka as a victorious ex-sekitori in the top 5 ranks. In addition, Wakanosho's 7-0 quest is already over, so no promotion for him. The highest-ranked list member still in the running for the zensho record is now Tenshoho at Ms17e; he had started the previous basho 3-0 as well but only finished 4-3, so it's not quite time yet to get one's hopes up that he might actually make a run for the promotion zone. All other makushita 2-0 scores are found in the bottom half of the division, comprising Shimazuumi, Asashiyu, Yuma and Yago. Akua finally ended his streak of lost matches at five, at the expense of fellow ex-salaried rikishi Tochimusashi. Other head-to-head action saw Yago beating Tochimaru and Kaisho winning against Daishomaru. Bushozan is having a much better start into this tournament than the last one (which he opened 0-3) and is standing undefeated for now, albeit in high sandanme. Conversely it's an 0-2 opening for Asanowaka, and as mentioned he might well be on the road to jonidan if that doesn't stop soon. Asashosakari Posted July 18 Author Posted July 18 Day 6 - Results Back to below 50% at a 13-16 total score, but this time with a clean slate in the promotion zone: Asanoyama, Kitanowaka and Takakento all picked up wins. The various 2-0 starters had a rather worse time of it, with makushita losing three of its erstwhile five unbeaten records (Shimazuumi and Yago remain), and sandanme dropping two out of three (only Fujiazuma is 3-0 here). Head-to-head action took place at opposite ends of the arasoi: Shimazuumi prevailed over Asashiyu in a meeting of undefeated rikishi, while Daishomaru picked up his first win at the expense of still-winless Chiyonoo. Akua and Enho improved their scores to 2-1 and can continue to hope for a return to top 5 and top 15 status, respectively. Conversely, the bottom of the makushita division sees Asagyokusei at 0-3 and already in serious danger of another trip to sandanme for September. The current sandanme division thankfully has nobody winless anymore after Chiyosakae and Asanowaka scored their first victories. Asashosakari Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 (edited) Day 8 - Results new KK: Kitanowaka, Yago new MK: none Trios of rikishi had entered the round on scores of 3-0 and 0-3, respectively, but only Yago kept the zero going - a thankful outcome as far as the 0-3's are concerned, of course. Most crucially, the makekoshi was avoided by promotion candidate Mudoho whose hopes of a juryo return are hanging on by a thread, but they're hanging. Also in the promotion zone: Kitanowaka defeated Asanoyama, and then succeeded up in juryo as well. Nevertheless, four wins from Ms3w are likely not yet enough as the promotion race shapes up to be very competitive this basho. Shimazuumi and Fujiazuma dropped to 3-1 and thus out of their respective yusho races. In any case it wasn't exactly a great round altogether, with 14 wins and 17 losses. In particular the lower-ranking list members took a lot of losses: From Asanoyama to Kitaharima the combined score was 9-3, from Daishoho on down just 5-14. That includes a head-to-head result of exactly these arbitrarily chosen end point rikishi, as Kitaharima prevailed over Daishoho on Day 7. Incidentally, a direct clash also occurred a bit further up with Wakanosho beating Tochimusashi. Meanwhile, Akua has won three straight since he ended the losing streak he'd carried over from Natsu basho, and we just might see him back in the promotion zone for September. Enho was injured in his Day 7 loss and subsequent had to withdraw from the basho. Almost everyone was defeated in sandanme, just Nionoumi came away with a shiroboshi down there. Bushozan had a bit of a hard-luck assignment against MsTd debutant Ryusho. Asanowaka and Amakaze dropped to 1-3 and avoiding the ticket to jonidan becomes ever more difficult for them. Asashosakari Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 Day 10 - Results new KK: Shimazuumi new MK: Daishoho, Asagyokusei, Asanowaka, Yoshiazuma A positive score in this round with 16 wins and 12 losses. The leading performance continues to be Yago's zensho run, but Shimazuumi's kachikoshi may well portend the rise of a more likely challenger for renewed sekitori status in the near(ish) future. Some positive developments also in the promotion zone where Asanoyama improved his tally to 3-2 (at a rank where 4-3 is likely sufficient) and Mudoho keeps his chances alive at 2-3. Takakento, on the other hand, dropped to 2-3 and is almost certainly out of the promotion race. KK would still help immensely, of course, so it's still crunch time for him. Just outside the top 5, Wakanosho has recovered his score from 1-2 to 3-2. Daishoho's slide down the rankings sadly continues unabated; after last basho's 1-6 he has fallen to another early makekoshi and I wouldn't bet on him turning that 1-4 into a 3-4. Today's defeat came at the hands of fellow ex-sekitori Kaisho, himself at risk of picking up a third straight MK. Asagyokusei will be going back to sandanme, and should be the only competitive demotion (joining absent Kawazoe and Kiryuko); everybody else already has enough wins to stay in makushita. More losses than wins below the third division again, even if it wasn't quite as bad as round 4. Bushozan prevailed over Nionoumi head-to-head and is the best (and maybe only) contender to stage a return to makushita for next basho. Asanowaka's makekoshi makes him a prime candidate for a demotion out of sandanme, while Dairaido (with a loss) and Amakaze (with a win) are now both 2-3 and not out of the woods yet. Yoshiazuma's makekoshi is his earliest since Haru 2024, which was his last appearance in sandanme and ended in a score of 0-7. Asashosakari Posted July 24 Author Posted July 24 (edited) Day 12 - Results new KK: Asanoyama, Kitaharima, Asashiyu, Tochimaru, Bushozan, Fujiazuma new MK: Mudoho, Enho, Daishomaru, Kaisho, Chiyosakae, Amakaze More broadly, if not spectacularly, positive results courtesy of 16 wins and 13 losses in the penultimate round of Nagoya matches. Split outcomes up in the promotion zone. Asanoyama secured the crucial and most likely promotion-clinching fourth win, and Takakento avoided makekoshi in a Day 11 visit to juryo. It was MK time for Mudoho, on the other hand, and he is at risk of leaving the top 5 ranks even with another win. Kitanowaka was also defeated and his hopes of a return to salaried status now depend on a more successful seventh match. The four rikishi ranked from Ms5 to Ms9 are all at scores of 3-3, so it's crunch time for them if they want to have a shot at promotion in September. Spoiler: They have been paired up for the final round, so only Takakento or Tochimusashi can make it, as well as Wakanosho or Akua. Chiyomaru and Tenshoho stand on 3-3 as well, just outside the top 15 ranks, so they're also set for crucial bouts (although not against each other, as they already fought on Day 2). In news I'm underplaying here by talking about it so late: We have a 6-0 ex-sekitori, as Yago defeated youngster Ikarigata to give himself a shot at the makushita yusho tomorrow. Best of luck, it won't be easy against high makushita regular and upcoming juryo debutant Asahakuryu. Yago may be advancing into the top 15 for Aki basho, but it's not certain if he finishes 6-1. Joining him and the aforementioned 3-3's as a contender for that ahead of round seven is evergreen Kitaharima, presently 4-2 at Ms24w, and in definite need of another win. Bushozan secured his kachikoshi and will return to makushita next time, though it increasingly looks like any potential return to juryo will be a slog for him, not a sprint. Not coming back to makushita for now is Chiyosakae, newly MK at 2-4. Our third high sandanme inhabitant Nionoumi has yet to decide the direction of his next banzuke movement. Bringing up the rear are Daishoho and Asanowaka, both 1-5 at the moment. I thought I had completely overlooked him when I read the Daily Sports headline today "Heading towards a record 10th juryo promotion" - technically correct, but completely misleading, while Sponichi correctly pointed out: kachikoshi again after 3 basho - 2 makekoshi for Kitaharima in the double digit makushita make a return this year look quite unlikely
