Torikumi for Day 8 includes Mitakeumi, so obviously no kyujo.

Ahead of Day 5 (...)

Withdrawing:

Ms3e Kamito (fusenpai Day 4) - hobbled away favouring his right leg after losing on Day 3.

I only noticed today that Kamito's kyujo has unusually been declared to be as of Day 7 even though he withdrew with the Day 5 crowd. Side effect of his third bout having been scheduled for Day 4 already.

In another unusual twist, Kamito isn't on the kyujo list at all any more and fought and won today against Daishomaru! :-S

...which says a lot more about Daishomaru than it does about Kamito, since the latter was struggling to mount (and leave) the dohyo to begin with.

Apparently, he said his pain was tolerable after the hospital last night, and he would see if it gets worse in the morning.

The pain could be tolerable but his sumo is not so I really don't see the point. Unless he needs to buy a new TV and is hoping for some extra kensho or something.

If you can stand upright, you can fight. This is the ozumo way. (Sigh...)

Perhaps but if you can't fight well then better not fight at all. As far as I understand that's the reasoning behind many intai. I'm not saying Mitakeumi should retire, but at least rest until he can do his sumo again.

I am really curious about Kawazoe. His profile is high enough that I thought more info would be out by now (unless I missed it)...

In the lower divisions ahead of Day 11, a familiar face joins the fray but two other rikishi have to withdraw.

Entering:

Jk9w Sadanojo

Withdrawing:

Sd34e Okinohama (fusenpai Day 10)

Jk14w Wakasasaki (fusenpai Day 10)

Nikkan reports M17w Bushozan is kyujo from Day 7. He won his last bout to end a 15-bout losing streak going back to the Aki basho.

The cause of Bushozan's kyujo has finally been announced as a case of hand, foot and mouth disease, which have caused him extensive skin rashes and severe pain. No return to the basho, obviously.

Jk11e Sadanojo - an earlier start than usual for him, after seven straight entries for the last bout only.

I wonder if this is a strategic move. With so many rikishi in Jonokuchi now using the strategy of entering the tournament for only the final bout, if Sananojo does the same he will likely have to face someone who is fairly strong. Whereas if he instead joins for the sixth bout, he can face a bonafide 0-5 opponent.

A pattern is forming.

Juryo leader Oshoumi is kyujo, Shiden gets the freebie. He had his left shoulder taped. Loss to Tsurugisho on day 10. https://hochi.news/articles/20241120-OHT1T51036.html?page=1

Yep, as predicted.  He won't be hanging onto Juryo by his teeth next basho, so no sense in injuring himself further.  He only had a band on his right arm on day 8, and didn't looked stressed by his yorikiri of Daiseizan, so he must have gotten injured later.

Or so I thought - Bushozan returns from Day 12, when he will fight Hokutofuji.

He's lucky -- they put cattle down for that.

If it's not clear (and I had to look this up the first time I stumbled across hand, foot and mouth), the two (foot and mouth disease, and hand, foot and mouth disease) are actually completely unrelated.

Sigh.

One rikishi returns to the basho ahead of the last round of lower division action:

Jd6e Honma (fusenpai Day 6, withdrew Day 7)

Assuming they aren't retiring, these three rikishi will fall off the banzuke:

Jk5w Kyokutaizan

Jk11w Kaitoma

Jk13w Daishiyama

Pretty clear that he shouldn't have been competing but soldiered on in the hope of getting the six wins he needed to keep sekitori status. Once he dropped to 10 losses common sense came knocking on the door.

With those scratches on chest he looked like he had open heart surgery, and thought like he had one.
