Natto gone?

I mean at the end of the day, sumo is a Japanese sport for Japanese people in Japan. They want more eyes on the sport, but I don't think they particularly care for those eyes if they aren't Japanese.

Used to be that way, not anymore-not that they are madly in love with foreign fans, but looking at the percentage of foreign heads in the crowd at the KKan last time I was there, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the potential that is growing very quickly. 5 day London Jungyo etc..

But probably 99% of those foreigners just see Sumo as a novelty — an activity to be tacked on to their trip to Japan. I imagine very few care to watch matches from their home countries.

The only way that the NSK could be willing to get more money on the table as mentioned earlier is if a major foreign networking company offered them a deal to stream live. I doubt NHK would be interested in a partnership

Brings me back to memories some time ago where there was a YouTuber from Hawaii who used to record and upload the daily results for all divisions before his channel was shut down. I used to watch him before I discovered Sumo Forum and Kintamayama's videos. I can't remember his name though. I hope he is doing well.

That was araibira. He did some fantastic work, I used to watch everything every day thanks to him.

Unfortunately I missed the September and November basho. I was hoping to make up for it with NattoSumo's videos. My hope seems vain at the moment...

It would be great if a torrent file could be created with all the videos of each basho (or at least the two main divisions). I don't know if there would be enough seeders, but at least it would make it easy to keep these archives somewhere... That doesn't exist at the moment, do we agree?

EDIT: Is it just me or does NKH disable its Makuuchi summaries of previous bashos? I managed to find them on another Youtune channel (for now), but how stupid is that?!

Also imagine if NHK put as much effort into publishing the full top division results in a timely manner as they did to IP enforcement... they wouldn't have nearly the IP enforcement to do.

I know, right? This is a lot of time and money spent on something that could just be fixed by an intern with basic video editing software.

They do that on their main NHK World site, as well. I watch a lot of their programs and it seems random how long things stay up and how many episodes they keep up. I'm sure it's a contract thing, but it's strange. At least Lunch On! gets on there now. Some shows don't get video at all. Watch it in real time or not at all.

True, but the more people around the globe get to see what sumo is about, the more people will want to watch it live, regardless if they are hooked or if they get bored after ten minutes and go look for some cold yakitori. Once they pay and get inside, we don't really care why they are actually there- we want them there. Instead of them going to a real restaurant and eating hot yakitori.

...But every basho is already sold out nowadays.

I guess they could raise ticket prices (supply and demand), but it would make Japanese fans unhappy.

Big time sports make money by selling TV rights.  When/if Ozumo gets big enough, the NSK will have its own international TV deal.  MLB and NFL can make stunning amounts of money because the US is rich and there's a large audience.  Japan isn't, and NSK would need to have an international TV deal to make it worthwhile.  The major problem is it's Sumo -- if there were International Sumo stables with basho in different countries, it wouldn't be Sumo.

Sounds like users on X are in the crosshairs for posting clips of NHK footage now, too:

In general, all sports fans are squeezed in paying various subscriptions over air and or internet due to various broadcasting agreements while still not receiving a comprehensive access to a wider selection - be it only hockey or Premier League and still not getting all we want. Japanese are not different. There is a J1 League channel on YouTube only accessible with highlights (and no commentary) of the games played the same day, but in Japan you need to pay to see anything. There was none. NHK broadcasts live but accessible only in Japan I believe. It was launched 2-3 years ago, I forgot when. NHK used to have two on demand subscriptions services dividing the TV series and their documentary in both of them making you to pay to cover normal interests - a TV series episode plus some local social theme program. Now they have merged them in one. So, clearly there has been some progress. There are now videos on YouTube albeit later than what Moti provides. Probably as always in their wisdom the Japanese would continue shutting down channels and hunting down creators and online communities instead of approaching them for some advice on how to do things or to hire them to do those highlight videos bona fide. But it is just what they are. I used to get agitated but try watching rugby anywhere outside the big 6 Northern nations and the 3 Southern behemoths. Almost impossible. So hopefully in the future instead of having 50+ streaming services there would be some major ones offering access to more sports events. But chapeau to what Moti and Natto have done throughout the years. In some more just world they should be nominated Order of Culture of the Japanese Emperor for spreading the Japanese culture all over the world.

On the plus side, my knowledge of hiragana has improved a lot these last few days, there's a bunch of characters I know now. :-P Natto's absence forced my hand into watching Abema's footage and I end up associating the furigana to the rikishi.

Well hopefully Moti is still in business, he switched accounts when he was flagged and had a new one yesterday but it's gone now. I watched the individual matches posted but they aren't all there yet or won't be? They seem out of order too. We love you Moti!

I liked the fact that he posted the matches separately, and pukulu added valuable comments to each video. I could really take it in, and I learned a lot about the sport that way.

Every day I've been to the Kokugikan the sold out banners were flying, and I was there all day, and there were entire sections in the upper level that never had a soul even walk through them to get to another section. Off topic, but anyone know what's up with that?

Back on topic, kind of. Has anyone ever heard of Abema doing copyright strikes?

Some Twitch streamers using ABEMA feed got in trouble, I think.

People who are restreaming Abema live are frequently getting hit. I haven't heard of any strikes on people using Abema footage after the fact lately, but there are so many people doing that that it's quite possible that specific cases have just escaped my notice.

Personally speaking, I've got 15 bout clips on my account that were claimed by Abema, but all several years ago. One of them from Hatsu 2018 is completely blocked (details here and here), the others are from Kyushu 2020 and Hatsu 2021 but were only claimed for content and are otherwise unaffected. (I don't remember when those were claimed, whether at upload or some later date.)

He is still posting his daily videos but giving them cryptic titles and taking them down quickly to avoid detection! You can find the links in a thread in Honbasho Talk.

Natto is still making his videos, though I have no idea where he posts them. There's at least one (non-English) youtube channel that's reposting them with commentary.

Natto created a channel on VKontakte.

I don't think that's Natto himself, just yet another person reusing his content.

Yeah I can confirm that's not Natto. There's also someone on Rumble posting his videos, again it isn't him, just another reposter. Reposting is fine as long as they're not using it as an excuse to try and make some money (not that there's anything we could do about it anyway).

I know of at least 2 on Twitch and two more on youtube who have been streaming Abema live for a few years now.
