Invitation to Play GTB - March 2025 - 359 entries - RESULTS!!

Whenever people start posting their guesses there's usually one thing the jumps out at me as a blunder on my part. Last time I was too generous with Chiyoshoma, this time around it looks like I have been too harsh on Endo. Oh well, I'll find out soon enough.

All the posted guesses have Endo at M9, no?

He could reasonably go anywhere from 4w to 5w.

Can I ask why the M18 is on the East side and not on the west for balance of the banzuke and having 21 rikishis on each side?

Because balancing only happens above Maegashira.

The balance thing is to not have the physical banzuke be too lopsided, and character size decreases with rank, so shifting a maegashira doesn't help much.

Back when rikishi never switched sides of the dohyo during the basho and always fought from the side they were on the banzuke, an odd maegashira out would have to be on the opposite side from the odd sanyaku.  Now, not so much.

They're the same name, but they aren't from the same ichimon, so while I don't know for sure, I don't expect that to have been a consideration.

edit: Guess I was wrong.

of course

the shisho had also thought about giving him this shikona. Onosato is not something open for grabs, the shikona of a famous ozeki, called a god of sumo - Nakamura starts with a modest hiragana no の, the ozeki had the katakana version ノ. There were voices like "for a new recruit it is far (10 years) too early to use that name". The shisho last month had phoned the family of Onosato in Aomori and explained the details of this name succession and has the consent - they want Nakamura to challenge for ozeki and yokozuna. He is a completely different type though, Onosato was just 164cm tall, below 100kg - Mainoumi type.

Hopefully he won't put shame on the name of the sumo god. Ozeki reached, so not 10 years early, but not without scandals

And he is connected there now

Onosato on his ozeki run for the first time was at the town hall of the hometown Fujisaki, Aomori, of "sumo god" ozeki Onosato (famous ozeki, but never won a yusho) and watched the akeni and kesho mawashi etc. on display in the Sports Plaza - with the present head of the family. First time he met with the family, who had agreed to have him use the shikona, via a connection through ex-Wakanosato, Aomori ani-deshi of Kisenosato.

The hometown Fujisaki of Onosato I in Aomori pref. wants to give O2 a kesho mawashi with Fuji apple - Fujisaki is the origin place of that variety. A local koenkai for Onosato II will be formed there, which presents him with the kesho mawashi. o

Today the Fuji kesho mawashi was presented to Onosato at the heya location in Fukuoka by the town mayor of Fujisaki. The Fuji apple design is in that of the Japanese flag, with the purple fringe and tassels reserved for Y/O. The koenkai will start in December - it is rare to have one where there is no local or family connection.

60 points I think. Knew it wasn't going to be my day when I saw Oho at sekiwake. Looking at another solid KK without bothering the leaders.

64 here.

  • 0/12 for M5w-M8e
  • 2/4 for M9
  • 2/4 for M14
  • 0/4 for M17w-M18e

My biggest hits based on what I've seen (or rather, not seen) in other submissions: Oho over Kirishima, and Ichiyamamoto at M4w.

Winner's score will be higher for sure.

Mitakeumi behind Kotoshoho invalidates one of the things that I had taken for granted - that terrible records (3 wins or less) were always shown more leniency than the numbers would suggest.  I seem to recall there may have been another of these (if not more than one) recently, but now it's absolutely clear and I need to change my thinking.

There have been a few instances recently where really bad records got dinged harder than merely poor ones, but I still viewed this as a coin flip just because 2-13 is so, so bad. TBH, I think they're starting to look at clearly injured wrestlers as guys to shuffle out of the way rather than protect.
