New Juryo for Haru 2025

Recommended Posts

(Posting this newly in Honbasho Talk after the recent discussions that basho-adjacent news should go here. Disagree? Please speak up.)

New:
Wakanosho - Ms1e 5-2, Tokiwayama-beya, Tochigi, 21 years old
Kusano - Ms3w 4-3, Isegahama-beya, Kumamoto, 23 years old
Otsuji - Ms5w 5-2, Takadagawa-beya, Hyogo, 21 years old

Returning:
Kazekeno - Ms1w 4-3, Oshiogawa-beya, Ehime, 25 years old, 2nd promotion, back after four basho
Hitoshi - Ms4w 6-1, Oitekaze-beya, Tokyo, 27 years old, 2nd promotion, back after seven basho

No name changes for Kusano and Otsuji apparently, and as generally expected, no promotion of Miyagi (Ms4e 4-3) at the expense of Hatsuyama (J12e 6-9).

To me it feels like "news in between basho", so I'd go the other way.

But here is fine. I check both places.

So Otsuji finally broke through, while his rival Yoshii continues to languish in Makushita (2-5 at Ms18).

I'm surprised to find this here and not over in Ozumo Discussions, but it's not really an important distinction.

New Juryo for [Basho], the Purgatory of threads.

I'd leave it with Honbasho Talk, since it is directly after the previous basho.

Well, most of ozumo content is related to basho one way or another.

Perhaps, merging both sections would be the easiest.

I haven't seen this discussion in ozumo discussions. I don't mind having this thread in Honbasho Talk, it concerns the upcoming basho. My preparation threads do that as well, but the preparations never had been posted here and I don't like that they had been moved here twice without even giving me notice. If they do, so do the YDC soken threads for the basho, the retirements threads after the basho and more. It makes it difficult to search for news about one rikishi when the preparation threads are in honbasho, because there the threads are full of rikishi names.

Not that I have much to say about sub-forum usability, but to me it feels pretty natural to place this thread type in Honbasho Talk, as the content always becomes available within three days of the basho conclusion. In some way, it cleans up the aftermath. This together with YDC talk and then it's back to general stuff in the other sub-forum. IMHO.

Yeah, juryo promotions are arguably stuff without enduring interest; its news value is directly connected to the basho that produced these decisions and then maaaybe again in the lead-up to the next tournament when the promotees are first up to compete in juryo. (Nobody particularly seemed to mind that the post-Kyushu promotions were only mentioned in the Promotion Talk thread, BTW, not in a thread of their own at all, until Akinomaki made the usual second one for the corresponding rikishi pictures. That made me a little sad.) I'd argue that ozeki and yokozuna promotions are a more long-running thing both in how they come together and it how they're discussed afterwards, so those still more properly belong in Ozumo Discussions, as do retirement threads because their connection to specific tournaments is usually coincidental (exceptions like Terunofuji's aside, who wouldn't have retired without what happened in the basho).

But it's tricky to draw the line. Long, long ago we used to have the New Recruits threads in Ozumo Discussions and the corresponding maezumo results in Honbasho Talk, which strictly made sense but was hella inconvenient. And Akinomaki raises a good point that it can become difficult to locate news-type threads by shikona again if they're in here because there are way more search hits on shikona here in Honbasho Talk than in Ozumo Discussions. Hmm.

Maybe the line separating what goes in which section needs to be clarified in a completely different way than "belongs to honbasho chronologically / does not belong to honbasho chronologically". Obviously we haven't fully adhered to that anyway, so the topic being raised before Hatsu didn't come out of nowhere, and "it's always been done this way" feels like a weak justification for doing things. Although it might be the only one we all end up agreeing on. (In which case I'd have no problem if this thread were moved over.)

With the risk of opening this can of worms again, I guess I'm more of a literal person so I'd see honbasho talk as anything going on during honbasho and ozumo discussions as the place for everything between honbasho. If the lines are blurred then an argument could be made that a lot of threads should be here, even some kabu discussions since they're sometimes related to retirements during or soon after the basho. Also intai news, yokozuna and ozeki promotions (directly related to performance at honbasho) etc.
