Is Hoshoryu the 1st active yokozuna to wear specs?

He's certainly in the minority of rikishi who'll watch their blood being drawn.
Most of them appear to be like me: no fuss, but keeping it out of their line of sight while it's happening.

"Growing" 1mm is hilariously meaningless--a typical man loses >1.5cm between waking and sleeping every day.

True- I also find it quite funny that I "grow" 2cm during visits to the physio- they measured me before and after once. I still don't know if it was to gloat, make fun of me or to prove a point.

The 1mm even was the NikkanSp headline - I checked and found, he's not 180cm as the article says, but 188.0cm - would have been odd otherwise. His profile will show 188.1cm next - rikishi don't have to really grow, if the hair grows, they gain height.

A heavy one, Nishikimaru - several nurses tried to get some blood from him - it took 45min (still at 147kg in the DB, over 210kg now)

Shirokuma is the clear winner in the needle expression contest - hiding the tears - but smiling afterwards: "It doesn't hurt a bit"

Onosato simply hates it, but with an ozeki-becoming dignified expression

This time the complete height/weight data are not yet published, but makuuchi average is about 160kg for quite a while now.

In Japan, rikishi are frequently used to illustrate heaviness.

The weather forecast for Japan has warnings for heavy snow the next 2 weeks, with the danger that 10cm of snow may pile up on the roof. On a roof of 100sqm, that means a load of about 1.5tons, the equivalent of about 10 rikishi. http://newsdig.tbs.co.jp/articles/-/1720562?page=3

So, which year did they use for this average of 150kg for a rikishi (and which divisions)? Looks like oicho, so only the sekitori, and likely they use rikishi=makuuchi

This makes me want to circulate a flyer to the Japanese construction industry showing 10 rikishi sliding off a steeply inclined, Scandinavian-style roof...

In the US, everything is measured in football fields. In Japan, in rikishi.

There doesn’t have to be a needle involved to show a painful face - Ichiyamamoto at the grip strength test

Oshoumi is shown to fight the pain by support with his other arm

GjOjgZRbMAAZiCE?format=jpg&name=thumbo GjOjgz6a4AAQHnT?format=jpg&name=thumbo

many others are again shown happy by the NSK - Oshoma, Oho, Kitanowaka

GjTituKawAE1KKR?format=jpg&name=thumbo  GjOjwGLaQAE7n_x?format=jpg&name=thumbo GjOjwgPbwAAunpE?format=jpg&name=thumbo

and one who hides everything - Roga

Jonokuchi Nishikimaru had to wait around for 45 minutes till someone finally found a vein. 220 kilos. Now, he has been hospitalized with cellulitis. "Yes, he's way too heavy," said Asahiyama Oyakata his boss. He is slated to be released in time for Haru basho.

Still happy after the torture on the 5th

He had a fever of 39deg.C last week, since December he wasn't at the keiko ground, going from one physician to the next. At the health check they found that his heart is enlarged and his lungs white like close to pneumonia. He realized he has to reduce his weight and stopped eating between meals, the super-size onigiri his mother brought him, now only the hospital food. The heya is making a Nishikimaru diet plan.

The follow-up to the health-check: one of the unwritten duties of a rikishi, blood donation at the kokugikan by the healthy

36 volunteered today, 30 had cleared the criteria (GOT/GPT for hepatitis check etc.), 12l of blood were collected

- especially from those who didn't make a pain grimace at the minor blood donation for the health check

Enho (AB) couldn't smile the whole time though

Roga

Kusano was happy about the present they get for the blood loss
