Endo is obviously suffering from a serious concussion. His opponents are exploiting it already. Asakoryu hit him squarely in the side of his jaw, the favorite spot to KO somebody, and he is already too slow to avoid it. Endo´s entire behavior is exactly that from somebody being punch-drunk. If this were boxing or the NFL, he would not be allowed to enter the ring/field. He should be in a dark room in the hospital for two weeks, and not on the dohyo. My guess is he goes kyujo immediately after his 8th win.

You're not the first person I've heard say it's an obvious concussion. Not saying you're wrong, but it's not obvious to me. I've just thought it looked like he had immense back pain trying to stand up the last 4 days.

Hakuho had a similar journey and honestly was quite lucky to get that good of results, his sumo was super frantic and pulling, often retreating around the edge of the ring.

I don't get this comparison. Hakuho was significantly younger when he passed through makushita and he also didn't suddenly go 15-0 when he got to Juryo.

Tamawashi is looking to reach oyakata retirement age while still on the dohyo. Are they finally going to recognize him with a sansho? This basho there are too many maegashira with a shot at those, so unless he keeps kicking ass this last weekend, it doesn't look likely. He might have to face Aonishiki, who wasn't born when Tamawashi first appeared on the banzuke (and he wasn't even as young, he started at 19)

Kusano's run to me looks kind of flukish. He has done very solid sumo, but he didn't face anybody with makuuchi experience until day 10 (and that was Shimanoumi, for Homer's sake), then half-legged Tsurugisho and Roga, which would be his first win against "somebody" and Roga had it but was sloppy, but props to Kusano either way. He has even avoided the more promising youngsters in the division (Wakaikari, Kotoeiho, Oshoumi, Nabatame....(Laughing...), sorry, had to have that laugh). I love me some yotsu guys and he's looking to have a very solid career, but I wouldn't start the future ozeki alerts until some more proof. Next up is Kayo, whom you may remember from his roles on Raiders of the lost Ark and Hook. Mercy.

This is what I thought too. He got smashed in the face and briefly knocked out early in the basho and has been like this ever since. Hate to see it, this is how you get CTE

Simply performance in makushita doesn’t have some huge correlation with sekitori performance, and, Kusano hasn’t gone 15-0 either.

All this discussion about CTE when in reality most rikishi get CTE just from the tachi-ai. (Scratchingchin...)

I still hold that there is an unvanishing number of cases where they get injured falling headfirst off The Thing That Cannot Be Mentioned !

The drama!

Takayasu will need an epic finish to lose it. I call a Day 15 loss to Takerufuji followed by a playoff loss to Onosato.

Five out of six divisional titles wrapped up by day 13. A poor basho for play-off fans, unless...

I was expecting Takayasu to get Abi and Takerufuji, in either order, for his last two bouts but he has been matched with Churanoumi tomorrow. Never met before.

Enjoyed Takayasu's display today, his thrusting attack reminded me of our recently retired Ozeki. I hope he can stay strong and go all the way.

I'm still not rooting for Takayasu, but I do like a sustained tsuppari barrage, and that was the most effective I've seen in a while. Credit where it's due.

Onosato is going backwards far too much. Suggestions that he's carrying an injury seem credible.

I've got little fan investment in Kotozakura, but I'm strangely relieved he's a proper ozeki again. He's looked more in control of himself in the second week.

Takarafuji is unfortunately so injured that for a week or so he's barely put up any resistance in his bouts. Maybe he keeps turning up every day in the hopes of getting a fluke win or two but by now it's pretty clear that won't happen. I'd rather have seen him go kyujo and rest but that's sumo. I hope he can recover soon and bounce back from juryo where he's headed.

Meisei looked strong at the beginning of the basho and on a certain course for a kachikoshi but after losing to Tokihayate it doesn't look so certain now.

After a few tries Shirokuma still hasn't been able to establish a foothold in makuuchi. This basho it looked possible at times but in the end if he can't beat a 10-loss Shonannoumi then back to juryo it is. Hopefully he'll get another chance since it seems he could be a Takarafuji or Nishikigi type of lower makuuchi rikishi. (talking about current Takarafuji and Nishikigi, not their career highs).

Unbelievable energy from Tamawashi to fight against Churanoumi like that. Even if he lost in the end, this is nevertheless the best evidence that Tamawashi still has plenty to give and maintains his fighting spirit.

Kotozakura lives to see at least another two basho as ozeki. After last basho's disaster he seems to be on a slightly upward trajectory as this basho goes on, getting over some wobbles to reach kachikoshi with two days to spare. A huge weight off his shoulders for sure but simple kachikoshi is not his ambition for sure. I'm looking forward to having the old Kotozakura back soon, challenging for the top.

Wow, Oho! I certainly didn't expect that fierce attack. Maybe he channeled all his new sekiwake makekoshi frustrations behind this bout, but a well earned win, putting Onosato on the back foot and dominating the bout. I wanna see this Oho much more!

The best thing about day 13 was that everything is still undecided. I'm already savouring the last two days.

The agony of the long-distance Takayasu fan repeats itself, like a never-ending car-crash you just know is certain to happen every time, however easy it should be to avoid. Tomorrow? One win, and a loss by Onosato? Could it be? Of course not! We can't even whisper the thought. Sunday? No, no, of course it won't happen, we've been here too many times, let our hopes rise up too often, seen our dreams dissolve into ashes with such cruel inevitability. Best not to look; just lower our heads and walk away.

(Whistling...) yet still I look to find a reason to believe (Whistling...)

First career Takayasu vs Churanoumi match. IDK who they give Taka for day 15 though, since he's beaten everyone above him. Maybe Takerufuji? Or someone still on the verge of a Kachi-Koshi?

They really need to throw Aonishiki a bone on senshuraku so he can get his 10 and his well-deserved kanto-sho. Either that, or give it to him with 9 if they keep throwing him to the wolves when he's no really in the yusho race.

It would be very appropriate if Takayasu could clinch the title by beating Abi on day 15. It would be payback for what happened in the Kyushu '22 play-off.

For newcomers, Abi pulled a henka against Takayasu in the first bout of a 3-way play-off and Takayasu was injured as a result.

I figure it makes sense given the results at hand. It's the results at hand that didn't make sense. (Laughing...)

Churanoumi will be the first of the maegashira contenders he's fought. If he wins, they'll all be out of the running, so these seem like the top options:

  1. Takerufuji if he wins.
  2. Tamawashi if he wins, Takerufuji loses, and, y'know, vibes.

Which means it'll be Takerufuji if he wins and otherwise Aonishiki.

He dodged the bullet, I guess.
