Hands up if you thought Tokihayate would be in the yusho race going in to day 14...

Liars!

(Futeno...) Akchyually, he has been blessed by the utter draught of dominant rikishi and introduced into a category in which, according to statistical analysis, he'll reach sanyaku in about 3 years and has a 50-50 chance of winning a yusho (either he does or he doesn't) and he's guaranteed to be part of a kettei-sen at least. So, yeah, it was pretty much on the cards.

Now, if only Kotonowakazakura , the pioneer, had collaborated a little bit, we could have gone further into the rabbithole, but these top guys, they can't even suck properly.

The chances for an Aonishiki jun-yusho (joint with Takayasu) get better again - even the chance for a yusho remains, with an 11-4 tournament

If Onosato loses today, the chance of a massive chaotic playoff becomes real.

I expected Onosato to win the remaining two, the last against Kotozakura. But maybe Aonishiki has to face him. NHK expects the ozeki bout to take place though.

Aonishiki makes sense for Takayasu, and Churanoumi or Tokihayate for Onosato if he doesn't get KTZ. Or Tokihayate for Takayasu?

Despite Kotozakura not being on form and having less to fight for, I still prefer him to be Onosato's final opponent. Maybe I am not giving Churanoumi enough credit, but he has mostly looked like a punching bag vs top guys.

Easy to say - you don't even have a hat!

All considered I'd favour Onosato, but very excited to see how it turns out. Takayasu has a disappointing history in these situations but that doesn't mean he can't get it once. His pal Kise eventually got his rope after dozens of close ones!

The 10-4s are still alive but I think a bit underpowered for now, and I'd be surprised if the stars aligned so that one of them took the yusho. That said, I expect Aonishiki to be contending again and perhaps going all the way for a cup(s). His ability to create openings and quickly counter mistakes is especially impressive to me. High IQ and fast sumo reflexes.

At this point it's senseless to feel sorry for Takayasu.

To be honest, I thought Onosato would win in January after the usual Ozeki promotion let down in November. I was surprised when he didn't. He was my favorite going into this tournament and I will be very surprised if he doesn't beat Kotozakura tomorrow to set up a potential playoff with Takayasu.

I've only caught up up to the first two juryo bouts so bear with me here. :-P

Dang, Ishizaki chokes sekitori status away at the very last minute for the second consecutive basho. That's got to leave a psychological dent. I hope he recovers.

I wasn't too sold on Miyagi, admittedly, but his emotional reaction won me over. I hope he does well as a sekitori.

Aaand I guess that's really it for Hokutofuji as a competitor. (Weeping...) Very respectable career.

I think we saw today the last of Hokutofuji. His body is gone, no generating power anymore, and his fighting spirit left him :-(
