Five rikishi change their shikona on this banzuke. A run of four consecutive kachi-koshi has taken Kotosato into mid-Makushita, and now he gets his first shikona along with a given name change, Kototaiko Kazuaki.

Hanaregoma-beya's Wakakinsho changes his shikona to Dogo, the second kanji there can be translated as a roar or booming sound. Way of Boom? Not bad for a shikona.

Over in Otowayama-beya, Takeuchi's first shikona is Sanukiryu, derived from the old Sanuki province which is now Kagawa, his home prefecture.

Oshima-beya's Kyokushozan is now Kyokuhayate, he also changes the given name.

Finally, Asahiyama-beya's Okuniyama changes the middle kanji of his shikona to the more complex version. He did the same thing a few years ago when he was Okuniasahi.

Ms37e Kotosato Nobuyuki > Kototaiko Kazuaki (琴泰広 一顯,  ことたいこう かずあき)
Sd39w Wakakinsho > Dogo (道轟,  どうごう)
Jd65e Takeuchi > Sanukiryu (讃岐竜,  さぬきりゅう)
Jd83e Kyokushozan Tsukasa > Kyokuhayate Rinto (旭疾風 凜仁,  きょくはやて りんと)
Jd97e Okuniyama (大国山 > 大國山)

Three other rikishi alter their shikona first names only. The Yoshida brothers from Takasago-beya are now gods of wind and thunder. Less dramatically, Tokunomusashi merely changes the middle kanji of his name.

Sd2e Tokunomusashi Ryutaro (龍大郎 > 龍太郎)
Sd31w Asakiryu Ryu > Fujin (風神,  ふうじん)
Jd16e Asasorai Raiki > Raijin (雷神,  らいじん)

Is there no more pro-incumbent bias for promotions?  Or is the difference between Komusubi and Sekiwake simply not one that matters to them, seeing as there's no difference in pay?

25 minutes ago, Tochinofuji said:

Anyone know the last time we had a set of brothers at the same rank other than Takanohana/Wakanohana at yokozuna?

I only checked sekitori:

Roho/Hakurozan Kyushu 2007
Toyozakura/Kitazakura Hatsu 2005

Takanohana/Wakanohana at ozeki

Banzuke trivia:

The total number of rikishi for  Haru Basho is 588, up one from Hatsu Basho. There are 45 heyas. So who is the number one by stable and place of origin? Isegahama, whose number of rikishi doubled with the transfer of rikishi from Miyagino before the last May tournament, maintains the top position with 35 rikishi, just like in the Hatsu Basho. In second place is Takasago stable with 24. In third place are Oitekaze and Kokonoe, both with 21 . In fifth place is Kise with 20 and like in the previous tournament, these five stables have more than 20 rikishi. In sixth place is Takadagawa with 19, and tied for seventh place are Sakaigawa, Tamanoi , and Nishonoseki stables with 18 rikishi. Tied for 10th place are Dewanoumi and Tokitsukaze with 17 rikishi rounding out the top 10.

Isegahama also has the most sekitori with seven. Even though Yokozuna Terunofuji has retired, there are still six makuuchi rikishi from Isegahama, the largest number among heyas. Former student Yokozuna Kusano has been promoted to Juryo, so the number of Isegahama sekitori remains unchanged from the previous basho. In second place is Kise beya with six. In third place are Oitekaze  and Takadagawa with five each. There are 11 heya without a sekitori. Nishikido and Kataonami have the fewest wrestlers with four each. Nishikido  has added one rikishi since the previous tournament. Nishikido beya has Mitoryuu in Juryo , and Kataonami  has Tamawashi in makuuchi  and Tamashouhou, who dropped to Juryo, so they have a high "sekitori occupancy rate." There are 15 heyas with single-digit rikishi, the same as in the previous tournament.

In recent years, there have been no significant changes in the rankings based on the population ratio of each prefecture. Tokyo is the only prefecture of the 47 with more than 50 rikishi, and leads the way with 51. This is one less wrestler since last Basho, but Tokyo still dominates. Saitama, which has Sekiwake Daieishou and Komusubi Abi, and Osaka, where the Haru Basho is held, are tied for second place with 29 rikishi. The number of rikishi in both these prefectures has not changed since the last tournament. In fourth place is Aichi, which hosts the Nagoya Basho, with 28 rikishi. In fifth place is Kanagawa with 27 rikishi. Chiba and Hyogo are tied for sixth place with 25 rikishi each. In eighth place is Kumamoto with 21 rikishi, and in ninth place are Fukuoka and Shizuoka, which host the Kyushu Basho, as well as Mongolia, the home of new Yokozuna Houshouryuu and others, with 20 rikishi. In terms of countries of origin, Mongolia leads the way with 20 rikishi, followed by Ukraine with two. The United States, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines each have one wrestler. Of these, Ukraine (Shishi and Aonishiki), Kazakhstan (Kinbouzan), Russia (Rouga), and China (Daiseizan) are all sekitori. With Hawaii-born Hikarumusashi debuting in Jonokuchi, we have an American rikishi on the banzuke after many years.. The 19-year-old belongs to  Musashigawa beya, and is the nephew of former Yokozuna Musashimaru (current Musashigawa Oyakata).

I only checked sekitori:

Toyozakura/Kitazakura Hatsu 2005

Takanohana/Wakanohana at ozeki

Tobizaru & Hidenoumi @ M8, Hatsu 2022

Curiously, that was the basho Hidenoumi was suspended for. He hasn't been back to makuuchi since.

So no lenience for 3-4's in the top 5.

On the other hand, Daishoho with the same demotion for his 1-14 as Shimazuumi got for his 3-12. Ms7w, and here I thought even Ms9e would be an extreme longshot...

Too bad about Akua, I wanted to see him tie for the longest consecutive Ms1-Ms5 stint.

Juryo

Shiden (J2e 5-10)         J4   Oshoumi (J9w 9-6)
Nabatame (J14e 11-4)      J5   Fujiseiun (J8e 8-7)

Daiseizan (J9e 5-10)      J10  Shimanoumi (J5e 3-12)
Tsurugisho (J3w 2-13)     J11  Wakanosho (Ms1e 5-2)

Now that's some pointless joi favouring for Shiden there. And I definitely didn't expect them to put Daiseizan in front of Shimanoumi and Tsurugisho, but I guess any notion of a minimum required demotion has gone out of the window these days, so if the numbers say you should be in front, they're completely fine with a 5-10 dropping only one rank.

The first articles today (6h JST) focused on Asanoyama dropping to sandanme, then Hoshoryu, Aonishiki, Oho to sekiwake.

Hoshoryu is the 6th Mongolian and 8th foreign yokozuna. The 3rd to be sole yokozuna as new yokozuna, after Tamanishiki and Akebono - the first without yokozuna-less intermission. 5th fastest from maezumo to yokozuna in the present era since 1958. http://hochi.news/articles/20250221-OHT1T51229.html?page=1

8 promising new makushita, headline for Yamato, 3rd lightest now at 74kg, no new makushita in the 70kg range since last in the 80s, and for one of 3 without prior sumo experience: Yonezawaryu, in one year to makushita

They already were in the focus last basho, even before the promotion became very likely

very popular among the younger fans - mainly for their looks. Especially Yamato, soon to be the lightest in makushita for a long time, with 73.8kg 3rd lightest overall after Urutora and wonder boy Kosei. Down from 80kg when he entered. Younger brother of Suio

Yonezawaryu, only Abema celeb so far, had no pics the last 2 days, so I had to check the older pics threads, today a win again, the last 2 basho 6-1, impressive 3-0 at maezumo last year Natsu, esp. for one without sumo experience

Another 19y old sujo favourite without prior sumo experience is Ikazuchido, the 3rd is Dairinzan.

2 more 19y olds, last basho sd yusho Daimasakari is top career runner now in his entry class (shussegashira, surpassing Shunrai), from sd 32 to ms22 this time, the uchideshi of Daieiesho, maybe thus no "sho" in the shikona, only in the first name. The other is Noda.

2 classmates from Nichidai, Shimizuumi and Daikosho

It's in the Banzuke Topics (English version not available yet).

Lower-division guess post-mortem:

On 20/02/2025 at 00:27, Asashosakari said:

Guess                                                       Actual

Daiamami (J11e 4-11)     Ms1  Miyagi (Ms4e 4-3)             Miyagi (Ms4e 4-3)          Ms1   Ishizaki (Ms8w 6-1)
Shimazuumi (J10e 3-12)   Ms2  Ishizaki (Ms8w 6-1)           Daiamami (J11e 4-11)       Ms2   Tochimaru (Ms7e 5-2)
Tochimaru (Ms7e 5-2)     Ms3  Nishinoryu (Ms6e 4-3)         Shimazuumi (J10e 3-12)     Ms3   Mudoho (Ms44e 7-0 Y)
Mudoho (Ms44e 7-0 Y)     Ms4  Tenshoho (Ms7w 4-3)           Nishinoryu (Ms6e 4-3)      Ms4   Mita (Ms17e 6-1)
Kotokuzan (Ms2e 3-4)     Ms5  Akua (Ms2w 3-4)               Bushozan (J7w 0-0-15)      Ms5   Tenshoho (Ms7w 4-3)
Bushozan (J7w 0-0-15)    Ms6  Mita (Ms17e 6-1)              Kotokuzan (Ms2e 3-4)       Ms6   Akua (Ms2w 3-4)

I'm reasonably certain that the top 4 ranks will feature those eight rikishi, though it's easy to quibble with the details...Miyagi and/or Ishizaki might have ended up in front of the respective juryo demotee at their rank, and yusho winner Mudoho could easily go half a rank higher or lower.

Lots of people whose comments I've read - granted, mostly Futagoyama-beya aficionados - seem to believe that Mita will have made it into the top 5, but I'm not convinced. Nevertheless, that small block from Kotokuzan to Mita could be ranked in just about any order (outside of reversing the two 3-4's, obviously) without looking particularly odd. Bushozan is of course a bit of a wildcard altogether, anything from Ms5e to Ms7w is probably justifiable.

More generous to Miyagi and the big KKs than I expected, with Mita's placement the biggest whiff. Bushozan at the high end of what I considered reasonable, but for different reasons (i.e. I didn't think he'd go in front of Tenshoho, but instead it's Mita who passed him).

Regular service continues until Ms8w, after which a massive hole opened up which I could barely begin to guess how they might have filled it. Gojinyu is very high (Ms12/13 would be more typical) - 6-1's often don't seem to benefit much from available banzuke luck, but when I'm forced to put Kitaharima ahead of Okaryu (7 ranks on one win) because of all the available space, it seemed very odd to not put Gojinyu ahead of both of them (also 7 ranks on one win over Kitaharima).

I do wonder whether I've been too harsh with Daishoho; another likely landing spot for him may well be Ms10e, I guess. (Or even Ms9e, before all of the overpromoted rikishi? That would be very lucky.)

Dang...everybody here is in the correct order except for that wild miss with Daishoho. The kind of thing that kills GTB scores.

Chiyomaru (Ms10e 3-4)    Ms15 Hamayutaka (Ms29e 5-2)        Asashiyu (Ms40w 6-1)       Ms15  Asahakuryu (Ms9e 3-4)

There are really only 28 rikishi here who deserve to be ranked in the top 15 by recent history, though Tsushimanada's rank/record combo at least isn't far off. Hamayutaka will definitely be very lucky if he has made it in - that last happened from Ms29 or lower almost five years ago and most rikishi since then fell well short of Ms15 - but the list of possible alternatives is not exactly inspiring confidence in their chances:

Asashiyu (Ms40w 6-1)
Kazenoumi (Ms23w 4-3)
Tosamidori (Ms13e 3-4)
Matsui (Ms8e 2-5)

Asashiyu is certainly the second-best candidate after Hamayutaka. Free of context, Kazenoumi would also be an acceptable enough choice, but I can't see him getting the nod when Hamayutaka was only 5.5 ranks behind him on this specific banzuke.

And that definitely wasn't on my radar...apparently Asashiyu was such a good second-best candidate that they just decided to throw him in at Chiyomaru's expense, too.

Incidentally, Matsui took a hard drop all the way to Ms25e. You'd have to go back all the way to 2016 to find another Ms8 2-5 that went lower than Ms22. (Full disclosure: There was a Ms7 -> Ms23 move in 2020, as well. Still, definitely not how a single-digit rank 2-5 usually shakes out.)

Incidentally, the 13 promotions would be tied for most in the 21st century, disregarding the unusual situations after the match-fixing bans (2011.05) and after the makuuchi/juryo expansion (2003.11).

With the Asashiyu/Chiyomaru exchange we're now even looking at 14 promotions.

Likely to be in Jk
Jk 3-4   x8  Jk17w, Jk16w,  Jk13e, Jk9e,  Jk8w,  Jk6e,  Jk5w,  Jk2w
Jd 0-0-7 x7  Jd84w, Jd80w,  Jd65e, Jd64w, Jd62w, Jd50w, Jd46e
Jd 0-7   x1  Jd77e
Jd 1-6   x2  Jd99e, Jd87e, (Jd74e)
Jd 2-5   x2  Jd98e, Jd96w, (Jd92e, Jd90w, Jd85w)
Jd 3-4   x0 (Jd99w, Jd95e,  Jd94w, Jd94e)
-----------
        x44 => 97 Jd, 22 Jk

They're not going to keep the jonidan division at 100 ranks for Haru without some contortions - I demoted a few more rikishi than outright necessary there, but even the strict "should be in jonokuchi" list (from Mz to Jd 0-7) already amounts to 40 names for a 99 Jd, 20 Jk split, so they'd have to resort to promoting at least some Jk 3-4's to stay at 100.

They did do the prestige thing and pressed and squeezed until there were 100 jonidan ranks again. (Beingthrowntomatoesat...) Promotions for the highest three Jk 3-4's and they kept all Jd 2-5's and the Jd87e 1-6 to fill an additional six slots compared to my prediction.

Well at least there's one promotion I can celebrate on this banzuke - Hakuyo makes his Sandanme debut after eleven years! At last able to wear some nice setta on his feet, he went with stablemate Ikarigata to collect the new banzuke for Isenoumi-beya.

His shikona is taken from Hakuyo Junior High School in Taito-ku, which he attended.

And yet you thought (correctly) Mitakeumi would be behind Kotoshoho, when it's like the exact same situation.  I guess it's just the idea that there should be a minimum demotion for a 5-10, and Kotoshoho met that easily, while Daiseizan didn't?

This also makes the only half rank demotions of Ura and Tokihayate even stranger, as if they feel now that they can't leave a 7-8 at their rank if there's at all someone else close enough to take their spot, but that's the only time they'll ignore the numbers.
