Kensho Haru 2025

Recommended Posts

The usual announcement on Friday again, also this time a most ever basho: most ever for a regional basho. 2298 kensho have been applied for, most so far were 1938 Haru 2019, last year Osaka had only 1717. o The last bout has 285 kensho fix over the 15 days o - all in reach for Hoshoryu now.

11 new sponsors o

The top 5 in personal kensho

Onosato 164

Hoshoryu(up from 8) 157

Oshoma(as usual) 126

Ura (local boy) 125

Kirishima(still!) 117

Kotozakura(down from 1) 113

Oho is from Tokyo and apparently not that popular here

Shirokuma has a special sponsor: Shirokuma power company https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000136.000055631.html

They changed their name to this a year ago. The mascot polar bear is Power-kun.

Day 1 has kensho on every bout, Nagatanien has 2 each on all Y/O, Takerufuji and Endo and 3 on their top man Atamifuji, who has only these 3 on his bout. Tama home makes a distinction: 5 each on the last 2 bouts, only 3 on Kotozakura, one each on the 2 bouts before. The Tozaikai (brown jackets) is on Asakoryu-Sadanoumi. https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_01.pdf

- looks like they'll switch, but they are no that easy to find in the list and I won't  check them.

The development of yearly kensho numbers over the last 30 years o - this century going up, up - just 2011 the Haru basho canceled with the yaocho scandal, 2020 the Natsu basho due to Corona

Day 1 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_01.pdf

42:    Abi
24:    Onosato
15:    Wakamotoharu
10:    Ura
9:    Kirishima
8:    Gonoyama
8:    Hakuoho
8:    Endo
7:    Midorifuji
6:    Takayasu
6:    Takerufuji

Much less kensho tomorrow, with a bigger font for the kensho part, but still smaller than the torikumi part https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_02.pdf

Nagatanien has a cheap day: they only stay on Hoshoryu and Takerufuji and the 2 with contract meet - 7 kensho compared to the 13 today. Tama Home on ordinary days with only 1 on the last 2 bouts. Tozaikai on Shishi-Takarafuji - they usually put it on a bout with no other kensho and are easy to spot. With the bigger font also Kushikatsu stands out, on Onokatsu-Midorifuji. As new sponsor at the end of the list and on earlier bouts, today they were on Takarafuji-Meisei - both times the 7th bout, maybe they keep that pattern.

Quite a difference in numbers to day 1 - only 27 today for the last bout. Same number for Kotozakura though, but that's due to the 2nd to last bout, Onosato had 6 less in the earlier one.

Day 2 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_02.pdf

45:    Abi
42:    Onosato
27:    Hoshoryu
21:    Takayasu
18:    Wakamotoharu
18:    Endo
15:    Kotozakura
10:    Ura
10:    Hakuoho
10:    Tamawashi

Tomorrow Nagatanien also drops Takerufuji, the 2 regulars both get their packs, so again 7 in total for them. Tozaikai is on Shodai-Kinbozan, Kushikatsu on Nishikigi-Midorifuji, the 8th bout.

Hoshoryu still only in 3rd place, good basho for Abi. Also for Takayasu and Endo, both can cash in on their 3 wins.

Day 3 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_03.pdf

59:    Onosato
57:    Abi
55:    Hoshoryu
26:    Takayasu
26:    Endo
18:    Wakamotoharu
16:    Ura
16:    Atamifuji
16:    Kirishima
15:    Kotozakura

Tomorrow Nagatanien drops Hoshoryu and switches to Onosato. Endo has a huge bout, vs. Oshoma, with more than on the Onosato bout. Tozaikai likes Kinbozan, this day on the bout with Ichiyamamoto, Kushikatsu on Onokatsu-Takarafuji, the 6th bout -> they are a Isegahama-beya sponsor and switch between Midorifuji and Takarafuji.

Day 4 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_04.pdf

82:    Hoshoryu
59:    Onosato
57:    Abi

28:    Kirishima
27:    Ura
26:    Takayasu
26:    Kotozakura
16:    Atamifuji

Tomorrow Nagatanien switches back to Hoshoryu from Onosato, as if they knew. Tozaikai on Tokihayate-Kotoshoho.

Day 3 - biggest and smallest pack: last & first bout

Chiyoshoma joins the list - a rare appearance for him. He had 3 each on days 1 and 4.

Day 5 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_05.pdf

82:    Hoshoryu
71:    Onosato
57:    Abi
43:    Endo
37:    Takayasu
32:    Wakamotoharu
30:    Chiyoshoma
28:    Kirishima
27:    Ura
26:    Kotozakura

Nagatanien keeps switching between Hoshoryu and Onosato, tomorrow the ozeki again - saving the kensho contingent for later? Endo as co-leader should have deserved an upgrade to 3 by now. Tozaikai on Shishi-Aonishiki - it would have really been a shame if that bout had no kensho.

Day 4

Kotozakura

Endo

Kotozakura has quite small packs now - and he almost dropped out of the ranking yesterday.

Day 6 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_06.pdf

104:    Hoshoryu
84:    Onosato
67:    Abi
46:    Takayasu
43:    Endo
38:    Wakamotoharu
35:    Kotozakura
30:    Chiyoshoma
28:    Kirishima
27:    Ura

For day 7 Nagatanien puts 2 on both Hoshoryu and Onosato. Tama Home has 5 on Hoshoryu, 3 on Onosato and Kotozakura only the standard 1 for the first 5 bouts. Tozaikai on Shodai-Ichiyamamoto. Kushikatsu didn't stick to their pattern, day 5 they were on Atamifuji-Nishikigi (10th) and on day 7 for the first time on a bout without Isegahama-beya rikishi - Nishikigi-Shonannoumi (8th bout)

I'd love it if some Ukrainian sponsor set a whole wodge on Shishi-Aonishiki whenever it happened.

Chiyoshoma won't stay in the rankings much longer, no.3. kensho wonder Oshoma with his 3rd win still hasn't made it here, though about 10 for each - tomorrow more than 10.

Day 7 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_07.pdf

141:    Hoshoryu
100:    Onosato
67:    Abi
53:    Takayasu
47:    Kotozakura
43:    Endo
38:    Wakamotoharu
36:    Kirishima
31:    Midorifuji
30:    Chiyoshoma

For day 8 Nagatanien stays on Hoshoryu and Onosato and Takerufuji gets 2 again. Tama Home as usual for nakabi has 5 each on the top 2 bouts, Hoshoryu and Kotozakura, the standard 1 for the first 5 bouts including for Onosato. Tozaikai again on Shodai, -Tamawashi. Kushikatsu back to normal, on the Midorifuji bout.

Takayasu has a good chance to get over 100 and stay at this position for a while

Day 8 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_08.pdf

141:    Hoshoryu
118:    Onosato
97:    Takayasu
67:    Abi
64:    Kotozakura
43:    Endo
42:    Takerufuji
40:    Midorifuji
39:    Wakamotoharu
36:    Kirishima

For day 9 Nagatanien stays only on Hoshoryu and Onosato. Tama Home as usual for weekdays has 1 each on the top 2 bouts. Tozaikai on Takarafuji-Sadanoumi, the old guys like the veterans. Kushikatsu  stays on the Midorifuji.

Day 7 - Hoshoryu, Onosato, Takayasu

Not enough for Ichiyamamoto to appear here, he needs to win tomorrow as well

Day 9 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_09.pdf

141:    Hoshoryu
134:    Onosato
111:    Takayasu
67:    Abi
64:    Kotozakura
51:    Endo
46:    Midorifuji
44:    Takerufuji
39:    Wakamotoharu
38:    Daieisho

For day 10 Takerufuji-Shonannoumi had no kensho and the Tozaikai put theirs on the bout. Osaka based Kushikatsu put theirs on the last bout, with Osaka pref. Ura - I wonder if they had a plan on where they put their kensho this basho.

Day 8 big pack for Takayasu

He not just made it into the ranking, but quite a jump into the middle, another present from Hoshoryu: 17 of the 36 planned kensho for his bout redistributed to the new last bout. 10 went to other bouts, Takayasu, Daieisho, Wakatakakage is mentioned, 9 were canceled o Both packs for Ichiyamamoto need to be counted to know how many each exactly - maybe some site reports it, though unlikely: all interest is on Kotozakura, the Hoshoryu bout wasn't even in the NHK news. Takayasu likely will be runner-up here, Onosato no.1 guaranteed.

Day 10 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_10.pdf

141:    Hoshoryu
134:    Onosato
130:    Takayasu
67:    Abi
64:    Kotozakura
57:    Ichiyamamoto
51:    Endo
46:    Midorifuji
45:    Takerufuji
45:    Daieisho

For day 11 Nagatanien puts 2 on Takerufuji again and as replacement for Hoshoryu, 2 on Takayasu. Tozaikai  on Sadanoumi-Shonannoumi, Kushikatsu back to Midorifuji.

Day 9 - Ichiyamamoto cash-in

Takayasu has not many available kensho magnets left for the last days - he won't get Oshoma. A win tomorrow should get him to 2 though. Kirishima thank to the double digits pack back to the rankings, and at last Oshoma made it with his 6th win.

Day 11 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_11.pdf

169:    Onosato
141:    Hoshoryu
130:    Takayasu
74:    Kotozakura
67:    Abi
57:    Endo
57:    Ichiyamamoto
52:    Oshoma
51:    Kirishima
49:    Daieisho

For day 12 Nagatanien saves 2 again with Onosato-Takerufuji, and for the first time none on the last bout - but Kotozakura now has the chance to get into the top 3, sharing the big packs with Onosato. Tozaikai  on sponsorless Ichiyamamoto(-Tobizaru),  Kushikatsu on an Osaka boy again, after the first failed to fight, Gonoyama-Chiyoshoma

Day 10 - big pack in a row for Ichiyamamoto

Oshoma has secured his place in the top 10 now, Takayasu in the top 3 - Kotozakura still can get to 2. Takerufuji might rejoin the rankings tomorrow, Ichiyamamoto may fade out till the end.

Day 12 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_12.pdf

190:    Onosato
142:    Takayasu
141:    Hoshoryu
107:    Kotozakura
74:    Abi
69:    Oshoma
65:    Endo
57:    Ichiyamamoto
51:    Kirishima
49:    Daieisho

For day 13 Nagatanien upgrades Onosato and Takerufuji in the last 2 bouts, Takayasu and Endo to 3, Atamifuji to 4,  they have spared enough to do this the last days. Tozaikai on Tamawashi-Churanoumi, Kushikatsu on Takerufuji(-Kotozakura).

No other will get over 100 now, but the order of the top 4 remains open.

Day 13 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_13.pdf

190:    Onosato
154:    Takayasu
141:    Hoshoryu
121:    Kotozakura
78:    Oshoma
76:    Abi
65:    Endo
59:    Kirishima
57:    Ichiyamamoto
55:    Wakatakakage

For day 14 Nagatanien again none on the last bout - with only Kotozakura. Takerufuji-Aonishiki have their 3 and now also 2 on Tamawashi, vs.Tokihayate. Tozaikai on Shonannoumi-Asakoryu, Kushikatsu with something new, on Oho-Ichiyamamoto.

Kotozakura would get to 2 with a day 15 win, Oshoma after a miserable start nearly could get to 100 with another win, but he has sponsorless Ryuden on day 15. Hiradoumi out of nowhere to the middle of the rankings, Ichiyamamoto out at last.

Day 14 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2503_14.pdf

214:    Onosato
154:    Takayasu
141:    Hoshoryu
121:    Kotozakura
90:    Oshoma
76:    Hiradoumi
76:    Abi
67:    Kirishima
65:    Endo
62:    Midorifuji

For day 15 Nagatanien only 4 on the last bout - apparently with already max=60, so they restrain their pack, like Tama Home: also only 4 instead of the standard 5. 3 each on the previous 3, 5 on Takayasu-Abi - the 2nd biggest pack, 3 on Takerufuji, 5 on Atamifuji, 4 on Endo. The 3rd biggest pack of the day is on the quite unimportant 2nd bout of the day, 8-6 Midorifuji vs. 6-8 Mitakeumi (he technically could get demoted with a loss). Tozaikai on Shonannoumi-Kinbozan, Kushikatsu on Daieisho-Churanoumi.

day 13 - Oho - the biggest pack, but uncounted - not enough to join the rankings, also a win tomorrow is likely not enough for that
