It's gonna be touch-and-go for Kitanowaka if he doesn't enter and pick up a win. And only 8 active guys in the promotion zone...

Sd51w Taiga

Jd45w Sonoshun

Arashio-beya reports a medial collateral ligament injury for Sonoshun.

The heya also announces that Taiga has retired, they had tried to persuade him to continue but it seems his heart was no longer in it and he had lost his will to train and compete. He felt that staying any longer would make him an obstacle to the other rikishi who are training hard, so he has already left the heya and set off towards a new goal he has found.

I don't know what's worse - the diagnosis or Isegahama's statement. :-(

"Degeneration" sounds like he won't have a neck anymore. One month rest seems like nothing.

Well the diagnosis is of something that most people will have in their life for one week or another, and it depends on the level of severity as to how serious it becomes. Sumo is probably quite likely to exacerbate such an injury at every turn, making it more dangerous / painful. On the other hand, recovery within a week and no change to normal activities are within the scope of proper management of disk injuries.

Sanspo: 右腓骨骨幹部骨折 right leg diaphyseal fibula fracture, 2 months out.

Doesn't sound good for Haru basho, either...

BTW the medical certificate for Kitanowaka expects still 1 month of commuting to a hospital for treatment necessary for the right leg bone fracture from the Hatsu basho  o

- sounds like he may enter later to try to save his sekitori rank, one win might be enough

No. Depends on the severity, but medical advice for some disk injuries is to continue normal activity.

Injury lookout- Nabatame-took him a while to get up, wearing a very heavy looking brace on his knee. Just a look out for now.

looked like his knee collapsed during the fall. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looked, Futagoyama Beya have had some bad luck in recent months.

Nabatame is out. Per sanspo: damage to the anterior cruciate ligament & partially torn medial meniscus in his left knee. Will require at least three days rest with a possibility to return later in the tournament, depending on how he recovers.

Official now at the NSK site, which tends to be awfully late recently.

Not a torn ACL, we wouldn't be talking about 3 days if that were the case. The article uses the unspecific 損傷 "injury, damage" with the ACL, and the more drastic 板損傷 "tear" for the meniscus, though I strongly suspect from the recovery estimate that even that is "only" a partial tear. (A complete rupture would likely be listed as 断裂.)

In any case, Futagoyama-oyakata reported on the heya's socials that Nabatame has been able to walk, if gingerly and with pain.

That's my bad, I only use the regular site translation so it must have gotten mixed up in there. I'll edit my lost accordingly- I appreciate the correction!

Two in, two out ahead of Day 5, with a couple of late starters and another pair of withdrawals.

Entering:

Ms14e Tsushimanada

Jd23w Inaba - Onomatsu-beya gives the generic poor health (体調不良) as the cause of his initial absence from the basho.

Withdrawing:

Sd33e Fukutsuumi (fusenpai Day 4)

Jd65e Sanukiryu (fusenpai Day 4)

Oh, I had already forgotten twice to mention that Jonidan gyoji Shikimori Komei had been kyujo from the start, but I've remembered just in time to announce that he joins the basho from Day 5. (Sigh...)
