Kyujo for sure ... no hope it's not a ruptured cruciate ligament. Terrible .. he's such a sweetheart. (Weeping...)

He says probably 3 months for full recovery ... aiming for Nagoya to return.

That's either overly ambitions for a knee ligament injury, or a sign it wasn't worst case scenario after all. Hoping for the latter.

In the lower divisions ahead of Day 9, two rikishi enter the basho but one has to withdraw with a leg injury.

Entering/Returning:

Ms19w Osanai (fusenpai Day 2, withdrew Day 3)

Jk19e Sadanojo

Withdrawing:

Jd53e Kenho - His right leg seemed to collapse beneath him in his loss today, he left in the wheelchair. Not good, that is a lot of weight to go through one knee, if it was the knee that gave way.

Oshoumi is out. He found himself in pain this morning and felt in no condition to wrestle today. No official medical diagnosis yet, just Naruto-oyakata's statement that he hurt the instep of his foot in yesterday's win over Mitoryu. Left or right foot? Your guess is as good as mine, none of the articles are saying. May return to the basho depending on how his recovery goes.

Filling in belatedly with the official word, which confirmed the initial self-diagnosis by Oshoumi and Naruto: sprain of the lisfranc joint in his left foot, two weeks.

And while I'm at it, Kiryuko. This one needs bullet points. :-( And I'm feeling confused because the reports (despite using quotes) are rather different between Nikkan and Sponichi. I'm using Sponichi's here, but noting the differences.

  • ruptured right knee ACL (Nikkan has it as the left knee)
  • damage to the right knee MCL
  • contusion of the right femur lateral condyle
  • fracture of the proximal end of the right tibia (Nikkan only has it as a contusion)

In any case it's reported as requiring three months of treatment, but that's clearly just the actual medical therapy and not the entire timeframe for getting back into fighting shape (so not directly comparable to shorter kyujo certificates like Oshoumi's above, which are essentially to be read as "two weeks and then he ought to be good to go again"). I suspect we'll be seeing him in Aki at the earliest.

Oh boy, the wheelchair rolled out with good old Fujiazuma on it. Not sure if that guy can afford a bad injury at this stage in his career.

First shin-Yokozuna kyujo since... that guy.

There had been only two in the modern era, both in the 1980s, and their careers couldn't have been more different.

I'll be shocked if Osanai shows up for his 7th bout. He was already struggling to adhere to pre and post bout rituals, such was his incapability of squatting... and then his good leg ate a sotogake from Haruyama today. His bad leg immediately hoisted the white flag when confronted with his full weight, and soon he was hopping down the hanamichi on one leg.

Haruyama himself struggled to stand up and limped back home, but it didn't seem as critical.

For the final round of lower division action, one rikishi makes a swift return while three others make a late start.

Entering/Returning:

Ms46e Fujiazuma (withdrew Day 11) - seems to have been a minor calf problem that caused his brief absence from the basho.

Jd57w Satsumasho - reportedly (one of) the tsukebito suffering under Tobizaru, hopefully not entering for one last bout before quitting.

Jk11w Nishikimaru

Jk19w Higohikari

Nishikimaru and Higohikari meet each other tomorrow, the bout will keep them on the banzuke for the Natsu basho.

Assuming they aren't retiring, the following rikishi will drop off the banzuke:

Jk1e Kaizen (4th consecutive kyujo)

Jk1w Daibasho (2nd consecutive kyujo)

Jk8w Goseiryu (3rd consecutive kyujo)

Shocked I was.

Not so much by the fact his valiant effort was a bit of a waste of everyone's time, though.

Hokutofuji looked as badly hurt as one could be while still being able to hobble away on their own. I really hope he doesn't appear tonight.
