And what sort of reaction does he get from peers and senpais? I'm imagining the reception that a rookie calling himself "the real Tom Brady" would have at a NFL training camp.... You'll have to ask the real Hakuho about that

Yubinhaad 11,754 Posted March 28 (edited) A few pictures from Kawabuchi's danpatsu-shiki, which took place at Shikoroyama-beya's senshuraku party. Spoiler Heyagashira Abi makes his cut. Final cut from Shikoroyama-oyakata (former Komusubi Homasho). And some group shots, after the ceremony and then after a better haircut and a new suit. Three shots from Chiyohokkai's danpatsu-shiki. Spoiler Making a farewell speech alongside Kokonoe-oyakata (former Ozeki Chiyotaikai), and the shisho makes the final cut. Goshimaru was greeted by some of his heya mates in the hanamichi following his final bout, and then announced his retirement to the supporters at the senshuraku party. Musashigawa-beya says his danpatsu-shiki will take place back at the heya in Tokyo in the near future. Spoiler Saidaiji joined what was then Irumagawa-beya after graduating from Okayama University of Science High School. He served as tsukebito to Shishi, and when he was still learning Japanese he would act as an interpreter of sorts, translating questions from the media into simpler terms that Shishi could understand. He plans to return home to Okayama prefecture to learn about agriculture, in order to help his mother who is a grape farmer there. His danpatsu-shiki was apparently livestreamed on the Ikazuchi-beya Instagram. Edited March 28 by Yubinhaad

I suppose there could be a situation where a rikishi knows he's going to retire but for whatever reason doesn't immediately do so right after senshuraku. He could tell the shimpan that decide the banzuke what his plans are. They might then over-demote him to make room for someone who deserves to be there. The banzuke writers are human, after all, and there are no algorithms and few rules regarding the placement of rikishi. We would probably never know that's what happened, beyond speculation on the promotion/demotion threads.

As I understand it, the moment that your intent to retire is expressed to anyone official, you're retired. There have been stories of rikishi not being allowed to make one last appearance on the dohyo, etc. I.e. that guy's not on the banzuke, even if he wants to be. I was thinking more about the public announcement and wasn't really clear about it. That would require some good will from the kyokai since they would essentially be handing the rikishi four months pay for nothing but it's all hypothetical anyway. Perhaps at the margins, but given that the original post was about the guys who end up just outside the regular and extended promotion zones, they wouldn't overdemote some who'd normally be placed at Ms1 all the way down to Ms6, much less Ms16. That's the point I'm making: I am fairly certain this goodwill does not exist. You are in, or you are out.

Easy mistake as we have spent more time discussing Hokutofuji than any of the guys who have officially retired. 1

He can retire any time he wants but maybe he's thinking to try at least once to return to juryo. Or just seeing how his health develops to gauge if there's any hope to do so.
