Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted April 9 (edited) Hopefully this post isn't jumping the gun, but reports are coming out from the Shuukan Bunshun that Hakuho is preparing to leave sumo, and Miyagino-beya to be closed indefinitely. The jist of the article is that the re-opening of Miyagino-beya does not appear to be anywhere close to happening, and when asked whether he's be resigning, Hakuho "didn't deny it." It's not official, but various media are beginning to pick up the story and run with it, so we'll see how it plays out. Report in Japanese ***Moderators, if you don't feel there's enough meat on this bone to be worthy of discussion, feel free to delete, but the story's out there, so I thought it was at least worth making note of it here. Morning 85 Posted April 9 That's a surprise. I had expected his "mentoring" to be over and Miyagino branching back out when Isegehama retires.
Akinomaki 40,761 Posted April 9 It's Bunshun, lowest level tabloid in terms of sumo - their reason for the speculation: the recent rijikai didn't talk about the heya reopening 1 hour ago, Kaninoyama said: when asked whether he's be resigning, Hakuho "didn't deny it." He didn't deny it, he said "What are you talking about?" - various crap sources on YT etc. are repeating it. I'd prefer to not have to deal with (blocked) Yahoo news - original: http://bunshun.jp/articles/-/78190
Akinomaki 40,761 Posted April 9 Recent "news" along the line of this: Onosato denied the right of yokozuna promotion; the reason for Onosato's sudden retirement; Hakkaku fired; Hoshoryu intai ...
Tsurukame 4 Posted April 9 (edited) It seems like Isegahama-oyakata has also denied this rumour: https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202504090000803.html (This might probably show up a bit late since I just decided to come out of lurkdom, and the post still needs to be approved) Edited April 9 by Tsurukame Clarification 3

Miyagino-beya already is "closed indefinitely", that's been the situation since April last year simply by virtue of the fact that no specific re-opening timetable was set at the time of closure. (Notwitstanding the constant barrage of people assuming that it definitely has to happen by date X, usually with X being defined by some more or less randomly chosen offset from the day Isegahama turns 65.) And yeah, as Akinomaki insinuated, this article's entire line of argument essentially seems to boil down to, "no change of status has been decided at this time, so no change will eeeeeever happen now, therefore Hakuho is leaving." It's incredibly thin even by tabloid standards. Edited April 9 by Asashosakari

Katooshu 3,330 Posted April 9 (edited) 'What are you talking about?" = he doesn't outright deny he's retiring, so he must be retiring. That is some fanciful logic even for a BS tabloid. I'm sure that certain content creators will be having a field day with this one - "my sources tell me...." Edited April 9 by Katooshu

Tigerboy1966 1,474 Posted Thursday at 22:13 I cannot comment on any speculation about my promotion to yokozuna in May, when I would become the first 59-year-old and the first Englishman to attain the rank. But as the JSA has not explicitly issued a statement that this will not happen... well.. draw your own conclusions.
dingo 1,294 Posted Monday at 10:25 (edited) Didn't Kintamayama predict that Hakuho will quit at some point? Maybe he's fed the tabloids some anonymous comments from to make his prediction come true Edited Monday at 10:26 by dingo

Jabbamaru 167 Posted Monday at 21:29 That would be terrible for sumô... I hope it's just a factoid
Katooshu 3,330 Posted Monday at 22:09 (edited) He's already denied it, and the original quote hardly suggested he was quitting anyway. Just my own perception, but Hakuho strikes me as a fighter who would find motivation in a situation like this, to prove himself, rather than being driven to quit so quickly. Of course, that flame only burns for so long, after so many setbacks, after pissing off enough people, but if he quits I think there would have to be more piled on top than there is now. Leoben 146 Posted Monday at 22:46 If there's been no more news about this and no other outlets picking it up, plus the man himself and coach Isegahama denying it, I'm inclined to believe it was just click bait to score easy web traffic.
