In my opinion, ultimately and horridly, life has no meaning. But I ignore this fact and don't even wish to believe it. We create meanings about life for ourselves in order to make sense of our surroundings and to have things to live for. Our primitive brain even come with embedded urge to compete and procreate. Try that for a meaning. I hold on to what seems to be the only truly true tested fact, that I exist. That's why I want to enjoy life and live happy even it be a total meaningless.

Unless one believes in a god/higher power there is no overall meaning of life. Of course, people can create as many meanings as they want internal to themselves (as stated earlier). Referring to people's personally created meanings of life, the number and variety would seem limitless.

As far as trying to be happy all the time, well, happiness cannot exist without sadness. It's impossible to be happy all the time, but it's nice when I am.

The meaning of life is the opportunity to perceive and participate in events in the universe.

It is a very special opportunity for us because we will all be not-alive for much longer than we are living so let's make the most of it.

The choices offered would be better classified as 'best uses for life' rather than 'meaning of life'.

I think many of them are fine choices. For me, I think it is important to seek understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of the universe we have this rare opportunity to perceive. Also, I think it is important to be good neighbours to one another and make the experience as enjoyable as possible for others - or as least not spoil it for anyone else.

If everyone would at least try hard not to spoil anyone else's enjoyment of their life think how much better things could be.

Good question

The meaning of life is to enjoy yourself

The greater meaning of life is have a family and pass your genes to the next generation

The purpose of our existence is to populate and spread our culture and civilization accross the galaxy

That's what inter-basho period does to an honest sumo fan..

But on the other hand, imagine life when there's one neverending basho? :)

To love and BE LOVED- (Heart) That's what I'm waiting for (Laughing...)

WAITING!!! (Depressed...)

such a pretty girl like you... and still waiting (Clapping wildly...)

well my love-life was not very special (virtually non-exsistent) before i met my wife (Heart) (Heart) (Heart) (i was 22 yrs at the time), and i turned out not so bad.

first toddler is underway (Sigh...)

well what i want to say: your day will come. don't worry.

Yeah don't worry about it, when it happens it happens, we are both the same age, and I am still waiting.

Meanwhile, the baby has been born.

Her name is Kato Roos Kim van Dooren. She is now 1.5 years old, and there is nothing that I love more in this life than her.

I am now convinced that the meaning of life is to raise and love childeren and leave a positive legacy for this world.

Everything else is just for filling time and keeping yourself occupied.

Watching my daughter discovering life, and laughing as she learns new things is the most beautiful experience in the world. :-) (Help me...) :-S

Does your comment mean that you have children (and a husband?) as well?

In that case, congrats to you too. (Nodding yes...)

Parent's feeling is strong without a doubt. Child patients are very rewarding too. Gives a nice feeling to treat them and see them getting better. I can understand the feeling of a doctor working with young cancer patients. Must be one of the most thrilling moments to see a child cancer patient healing and responding to treatment. Something very profound in that. Of course children die of cancer too and that is the flip side of the coin but the essence of preserving life comes into play well when treating seriously ill/injured children. On the other hand treating dying elderly people is important too and is rewarding in a different way. Being able to alleviate the pain and enable a softer departure has its own "meaning of life" or rather, it simplifies the whole life. After all no matter what the dying person has done in his/her life, close to death nothing has that much significance. One only understands that life is life and better live it before death as death is death. As with small kids, they don't live life according to some plan, they simply live a life. 1.5 year old is the essence of life. Take it as it is and so on. So one great thing about being a doctor is to see a lot of patients on both ends; very old and very young. Goal is similar in treating both but also very different. Yet the basics are the same. Just enable life to be life.

The meaning of life was always pretty simple for me: to enjoy life. The meaning of life can be anything you enjoy, watching sumo, Your partner, Your children... (I dont have children yet but at least I found the right woman already...)

Along with the love for a child, there is the unspoken contract that you have to protect a child as long as she is not capable of taking care of her own. That contract goes to the core of life, and overrules everything.

Its something that you only fully grap when you are a parent yourself.

There is NOTHING more important in life than protecting your kids.

The flip side of this coin is that there is no worse crime than a crime against children, because it is a direct violation of this contract. Children are not to be touched.

Sometimes, reading the newspapers or watching a movie can bring tears to my eyes. :'-( where I only used to think 'that sucks' before I was a father.

I imagine that being a doctor for little kids can be one of the most rewarding things in life. OTOH I also think that it can be extremely difficult to cope with the loss of a patient.

With older people, death is not unexpected because it is part of the cycle of life. Kids are supposed to survive and live on.

No, not yet (Blushing...) I can't say that I am too young, guess not, but the time isn't right now ;-)

But I was born in a happy family and still have all the members, parents and grandparents, to hug.

They showed me that this must be the right philosophy whith me as the child- so I fully agree. :-)

Hopefully I can be as great as they are in a few years.

I (Heart) my family- and that is what makes me happy.
