Just surfed into a bit of news about Asashoryu.

Apparently he`s signed a contract with DSE to fight in Pride.

Asa in Pride

Nice, huh?

well, I hope he does better than the other Yokozuna....

Interesting news indeed. Well, the credibility of the organization must be pretty low, as neither Moti or Jonosuke provided us with such news from a major newspaper...

Oh, I read that. It said there are rumours circulated by the PRIDE organization that Asa will sign with them as soon as he retires. Then, it said Asa will be the guest of honor on New Year's Eve and will have a ringside VIP seat.

Asa is in Mongolia till the 4th, as I reported a few days ago. That was enough for me.

It is highly unlikely that it is true, and even more unlikely that if it were, Asa would have allowed it to be made public, and announcing it live on TV to millions of viewers can't be any more public.

Bullcrap, as someone once said..

They can't even spell his name right, or was it a Freudian slip on their part?

No doubt. It's spelled "Asahoryu" in all 3 places, so it appears to be more than a simple typo. I guess the writer doesn't know his name.

I have never paid any attention to these sports, but are they real, or another form of "Pro Wrestling"? I was into Pro Wrestling for about a year when I was 11 or 12, but once I realized the fakeness, I lost interest.

I guess there is a precedent for this though, given Akebono, so maybe he did enter into an agreement. It wouldn't surprise me if he was offered a huge sum of money. It says it will happen after he retires from Sumo, so no worries about him leaving Sumo anytime soon.

I don't know of any precedence where an active rikishi, let alone an active Yokozuna, has made it publicly known that when he retires, he will join this or that organization. These "crossovers" always happen AFTER the rikishi retired. The Kyokai will not let this pass, if it has an inkling of truth in it, and Asa surely knows that. IF it is true, all sides would have kept it a total secret.

A while back, he was quoted as saying he may in the future join something after he retires, and after the furor it caused, he bent over backwards to "explain" what he really meant. And then there was that "I want to do Judo when I retire so I can participate in the Olympics" thingy some time ago.

Bullcrap, take two.

There was no such "official" announcement made at PRIDE on December 31, 2004 nor there is no official news released from them. Perhaps someone at the site had a few drinks too many or regurgitated something.

Granted we have no idea what Asashoryu would do at this point when he retires, he has always shown his interest in martial arts groups like K-1, PRIDE and Japanese pro-wrestling and he does have many friends in these organizations. It appears though he and Kyokushuzan often go back to Mongolia compared to others like Kyokutenho or Asasekiryu.

There was a bit more of official news coming out of PRIDE on Dec 31. They had FILA (International Wrestling Federation) Chairman Rapha

Actually, there was a blurb on Sponichi, which was what I was referring to:

In any case, Asa will in no way acknowledge this, even if it were true, as long as he is active. No way.

But isn't he in Mongolia? How can he make a guest appearence there? Did they get a satellite link-up with him? Or did they fly him over for this occasion and fly him back again?

Can someone actually confirm he was actually there? If not then that's as much as credence you can put on this article. Perhaps another buildup to the event telling people that a bunch of people are going to be there. There is nothing at all on PRIDE's official site.

All the article says that it's "possible" that Asashoryu could join an organization like PRIDE after he retires, quoting "a source" with PRIDE - so it means nothing as surely Chiyotaikai or Kaiou could join PRIDE as they like martial arts events like PRIDE or K-1.

Exactly what I wrote a few posts upward. That is the reason I didn't post a translation..

Perhaps the big sumo guy they referred to was Musashimaru (Whistling...) and the reporter thought it would be Asashoryu. I know Maru was at the ringside when Sentoryu had his match but can you imagine if they can get Maru for the next year? Now that would be the scoop of some proportion. Or how about Akebono vs Maru - "Sumo Rule" (Whistling...)

Looks like they got a head start on April Fools Day.

This sounds similar to what Zenjimoto came up with a while back...
