Jonosuke 28 Posted January 5, 2005 (edited) I believe Kintamayama will provide you with far more insightful details in a few hours or so but just a bit of cursory look on Soken for you. Asashoryu missed it due to a fever as apparently he caught a cold again. For someone coming from a cold country he seems to be catching one rather frequently. I guess he hasn't developed the immunity. With the leading man missing, the natives (well you know those assorted YDC characters and oyakatas) were rather restless and entirely unhappy with Kaiou and Wakanosato's performance. In fact Kaou was scolded by Taiho oyakata to display more spirits as he was pushed around by a hiramaku rikishi after doing 25 Sanban geiko against Chiyotaikai who was also seen getting out of breath. Kitanoumi oyakata was more kind towards Kaiou though. "He's been going on for close to 30 minutes. You know he's 32 years old so I think he must have been exhausted." Our friend Makiko Uchidate was especically upset with Wakanosato who only managed to get in ten sessions. Ms Uchidate was wondering perhaps he did not want to show too much of his moves to others but since the yokozuna was absent, she thought he should have done more to show his presence. Meanwhile the young hopefuls showed they did indeed belong. Both Kotooshou and Hakuho beat sekiwakes like Miyabiyama and Wakanosato by throw and Roho pushed Kaiou out of the dohyo. It could become a long basho for those seeking their promotion. Edited January 5, 2005 by Jonosuke

Kintamayama 45,137 Posted January 5, 2005 (edited) Not much to add- KaioU was 16-9 in his bouts and was looking tired. He couldn't overpower Chiyotaikai like he usually does. "I got carried away and had 25 bouts. My condition? Just like my Oyakata evaluated (60%? 30%?). Somewhere along those lines..", he said, angrily. Tochiazuma was absent as well. Hakuhou did not interact with the Ozeki at all, but was going a lot for the mawashi with others. Naifuzan 1 Posted January 5, 2005 The tape on the fingers sure makes it look like taikai. A lot of other things does too, but that's probably the most obvious.
Onnagumo 4 Posted January 5, 2005 Sure looks like Taikai to me. The bandage/taping on the elbow and the fingers, the shape of the head and shoulders. If it turns out to be someone else, I'll be really surprised.

Sasanishiki 57 Posted January 6, 2005 Kaio met Chiyotaikai 12 times in sanban geiko. Kitanoumi Rijicho remarked "I feel his unreadiness. His body would react differently if he did more keiko with youngster Hakuho, Wakanosato and Kotooshu" He seems a little underdone as he was easily oshi-dashi'd by Kakizoe. Tomozuna Oyakata commented " It was good that he came face to face with Hakurozan (and others)" before absenting himself abruptly. YDC member Yamada added "You can feel Kaio's resolve to become yokozuna" Kaio, who hasn't said much lately, was brief today also when he said "As you can see, today was no good"
