sekihiryu 51 Posted February 25, 2005 wow 500 members now, but the sad stat is that of the 501, 204 members have not posted a single solitary post, not one. 40%!!! I find that remarkable, I am curious if any of the 204 actually frequent the forum on a regular basis i.e lurk and how many visited the site once and never returned. Odoriou 0 Posted February 25, 2005 wow 500 members now, but the sad stat is that of the 501, 204 members have not posted a single solitary post, not one.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm member #532... out of 501. B-) :-P On some other boards people have to be registered if they want to see the posted pictures or if they want to download things. But on this board this is not necessary. So I also don't understand why people register but don't post a word. Some may not know much about sumo and just read the threads to increase their knowledge. Writing in english can also be a problem. But why do they register? Anyway - 500 members is a reason to paaaarty! :-/ B-)
sekihiryu 51 Posted February 25, 2005 I'm member #532... out of 501. B-) :-/ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Our members have made a total of 47 420 posts We have 501 registered members The newest member is Tochibochi Most users ever online was 58 on Feb 2, 2005, 19:17 most odd that you are member 532, yet there are 501 registered mebers
Doyobi 0 Posted February 25, 2005 There is an explanation, you register to see which posts are new. If you are not a registered user then the forum software cannot keep trrack of what you read and what not.
furanohana 3 Posted February 25, 2005 In fact, this proportion does not surprise me. I even find it quite good. A forum, by its very own nature, is a place where a lot of people just look, and don't want to "step in", either because they're too shy for it, or because somebody alrdeady said what they would have said. I made a quick search in some forums I'm participating in, and SumoForum is quite good, compared to them : - forumjapon.com (a French forum about Japan, typically a kind a very big forum where everybody is supposed to find a place to talk) : 2047 members, but 652 (31%) never posted, and 1391 (68%) posted less than 5 posts - info-sumo.net (French sumo forum) : 436 members, but 325 never posted (74% !) (but this includes "old" members of the previous forum who posted some messages on the old version...) - a professionnal forum (of French biology teachers) : 1212 members, 796 (65%) having never posted. So, 40% seems quite a good number to me B-)
Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted February 25, 2005 The disperancies in member counts is most likely due to erasing some members. The count "532th member" evidently doesn't change even when the total amount of members decrease. Some register to advertise porn sites in their profile, some register many times either because they forget they had an account already or for some other reason and then old zero-post duplicates are deleted. There are many different kinds of member posting profiles. Some post incredibly much and then vanish almost completely. Hoshifransu, Yoavoshiomaru and Kishinoyama Whitney come to mind, some post at a steady state and have been members a long time. Vast majority nevers posts though. It is very nice when we get new members who post regularly and not fade away after a surge of posts during the initial honey moon with forum and as someone pointed out, forum has reached a certain critical mass which enables it to function even when many regular posters are away or busy. Even though at the moment it is a record slow period. Everybody is in Hawaii I guess :-/ The demographics of the posters is very good. 5-7 regular Japan-based posters is a big plus, 4-5 members who put the effort of translating a lot of stuff from Japanese kanji articles, active members from countries where foreign rikishi come from. Mongolia is strongly represented in this as it is in sumo but now also Bulgaria, Georgia and Estonia have their more or less active members. Special details is the wonderful fact that German and French sumo enthusiasts also post here a lot despite having their own native sumoforums. And one can never forget that we even have an active DANE poster! B-) We don't have African members though! Not active at least.
Odoriou 0 Posted February 25, 2005 most odd that you are member 532, yet there are 501 registered mebers<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Some older members must have been banned or deleted. B-) There is an explanation, you register to see which posts are new. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Okay, that could be a reason. As well as the possibility to write personal messages. (Reading love letter...) (Yes, I'm cheap...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nah, I ain't gonna give it away :-P Although I am slightly ashamed of the fact that I'm not one of the original members, but actually got in by coincidence a week later after having stumbled upon the newly opened forum (I think through a link on Moti's page) . Having been too lazy to reply to Kotoseiya's first messages about a forum I wasn't on the VIP list (Laughing...) Nice to see the forum has grown as much as it has now just over three years later :-) :-| (Punk rocker...) Edited February 25, 2005 by Yubiquitoyama

Burainoan 0 Posted April 8, 2005 A little late, but what the heck...i also agree that 40% is pretty good; there are other places i'm registered to that i've either posted not at all, or fewer than five times. here i've been a bit more prolific. but i guess having that banzuke to climb provides a little extra incentive. made juryo tonight! actually, there's one other way this board is good. with most of the forums i've seen, something like 90% of the postings are made by around 1% - 5% of the membership. that seemed to be true of this one as well around the time that i joined, but i think it's more balanced now. many of the most prolific posters have slowed down a bit (or disappeared in some cases, as Kaikitsune noted), but various other members have picked up the slack. the result being less dominance and a broader range of opinions, ideas and information. a good thing, i think.
