Robocup runs down the hanamichi

Recommended Posts

A strange occurence was noted today. Strange, even by Takamisakari's own standards. He actually RAN down the hanamichi towards the dohyo as he entered the hall, causing a tremendous eruption of laughter from the usually rowdy crowd at Osaka. "Why? I have no idea. I guess I just overdid the enthusiasm bit.. The running was not the reason for my good Sumo today.. Otherwise, we'd be having everyone running in, won't we?", he said. "If it's a 'light' running, it's fine, but full running?? It is not the way to behave in the vicinity of the dohyo...", said Kitanoumi Rijicho. Takamisakari is already being given a lot of leeway for his antics, and it seems the "running" bit will have to go..

Still, he added, "I'm just firing myself up." The reporter (and I..) wonders what next..

In baseball, Sommy Sosa endeared himself to Cubs fans by sprinting out of the dugout to right field at the start of each home game. The fans applauded this every time. I wonder if Robo is taking a page out of his book?

I wouldn't call his entrance *running*...he certainly walked faster than most rikishi do, and his footsteps could be heard clearly thumping down the hanamichi. It seemed more like 'walking with purpose'; he was on a mission to succeed in his match. It was still that stilted robot walk he usually does, just a bit faster and more thunderous. He stomped/clomped down the hanamichi.

I'd guess the NSK took advantage of the press asking about this, making comments to deflect attention from several poorly performing sanyaku rikishi ;-)
