Randomitsuki 2,826 Posted May 21, 2005 (edited) Day 14: Anju and Hidaka clinched kachi-koshi today, whereas Araki lost the decisive bout. Kageyama won the bout against Katsumori to go 6-1 which will probably mean a promotion to Sandanme. Edited May 22, 2005 by Randomitsuki
Zentoryu 154 Posted May 21, 2005 Congratulations Oshirokita!I wonder if Zentoryu will be ranked ahead of me or not. If Nakatani finishes 5-2 I'm sure Sawaii will be behind but if it's only 4-3 for Nakatani... My main concern now is that Oshirokita can select Sawaii next tournament. I'll have to get to work finding someone below that rank who can keep up. Perhaps the GTYW master is unstoppable! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Should certainly be interesting to see who ends up ahead of who now that Nakatani has finished 5-2. I hope Nakatani ends up ahead if for no other reason than to allow me to chose Sawai again next basho. (Applauding...)

But it is definitely a close call.

But it is definitely a close call. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hmm, a really close call indeed. It's definitely possible for Nakatani to end up higher than 64, see e.g. Niioka after Kyushu basho: Sd96e->Sd59e, but the Kyushu->Hatsu promotions in Sandanme all seem to be higher than usual, so under normal circumstances I think I agree that Sawai will end up ahead. I'm just happy that my pick Kageyama did exactly what I hoped he would do with his 6-1 and got me into Sandanme. Or, rather, what I expected one out of my picks to do since I had no idea which one of them would have the better basho. Looks like the joker was well-invested. (Applauding...) Hmm, wonder if I should pick this basho's Jonokuchi winner next time... Edited May 21, 2005 by Asashosakari

(Applauding...)Edit: I just looked at last basho's similar cases. Asahisakari got from Jd20 to Sd59 with 6-1, so Jd25 would mean Sd64 (Maybe your table doesn't take into account that promotions get a bit smaller the higher you are, not only between division, but also within a division?). Tetsuhikari moved from Sd96 to Sd64. So this really could be awfully close. Edited May 21, 2005 by Doitsuyama

This was enough to find out about the promotion shifts that you've mentioned. However, I wasn't aware that there can be seasonal changes, nor did I have many 6-1 records to sample - much was based on extrapolating. According to these data a 6-1 from around Jonidan 20-30 will be 65 ranks (as compared to 60 ranks if Nakatani had gone 6-1), and a 5-2 from the end of Sandanme will be 32 ranks (as compared to 35 if Sawai had gone 5-2). I am looking forward to seeing the Nagoya Banzuke already...
Randomitsuki 2,826 Posted May 22, 2005 Day 15: Masutoo won his last bout which gave a nice finish to his supporters. Ichinoya, Haku, and So are three other rikishi who improved to 5-2 on senshuraku. OK. Here are the estimated final standings after Natsu Basho. The number in brackets indicates the position in the standings after last basho. As for the virtual banzuke estimations, I think we will compare them to the actual Nagoya banzuke, then we have a good laugh, and I will promise never to do it again...
