Kotooshu, Asa's Last Maegashira

Recommended Posts

Well it turned out lasting less than three seconds. ;-) Any idea how he bled?My guess is that it was a shoulder rub on the face but that's not quite convincing.

The replay looked almost like Shoryu was aiming to drive his arm/shoulder into Kotooshu's face on purpose. The top half of the arm struck before the shoulder and I think it was the arm that did the damage. Apparantly Asa watched the replay himself after and was heard to say something that gave me the impression that he was actually aiming for that.

So you watched it on TV? Sounds disturbing if Asashoryu aims for that--hitting his opponent in the face... ;-)

Yeah, whatever it is, it looked nasty. Hope, Osh hasn't got any serious injury. I have a feeling that Asa is sparing his left shoulder for tougher opponents, avoiding too much raising it and doing all sorts of unconventional things.

i too watched it on tv,i dunthink he intended to injure kotooshu..seemed like an accident...the question is what exactly caused him to bleed.

on the replay i didnt see asa's hands with contact with his face..maybe i'm wrong but i dun think asa got anything against kotooshu..its not like asa vs roho. ;-)

LOL, the impact is damn impressive. First time I seen a rikishi stagger back 3 steps and out of the dohyo after the initial impact.

Is Kotooushuu moonlighting as a pole? Asa or anyone else can aim anywhere they like-their opponent is a moving person who is a professional Sumo wrestler trained to do Sumo. He just rammed into Asa and flew back from the impact. All Sumo wrestlers (except maybe Shoes-on) aim for their opponents. Some go for fierce harite, others go for the legs, others avoid all contact. So what else is new??

Geez..

Kintamayama, you might wanna read the above. It was not that Kotooshu rammed into Asa's shoulder, it was that Asa rubbed his whole upper arm in his face. I was not saying it was 100% intentional, I was just saying that IMO it's nasty. Such might be the world of sumo, but these brutalities of the yokozuna make me (and many of the Japanese fans, for that matter) dislike the yokozuna and wish for the next generation of rikishi to overwhelm him sooner. Or maybe hoping that he will join K1 or Pride where he would fit in better... (Whistling...)

Oh, I read the above. Nishinoshima has a similar perception like me here. If Kotooushuu was a better wrestler, Asa would not have been able to rub his anything on any part of Kotooushuu. Osh was up against the Yokozuna. He should be better prepared, or pay the price. To me, it's as simple as that. When Toyozakura (or Touki, when he was Touki) uses fierce harite and bloodies his opponents, it's part of the deal, and they're not even Yokozuna.

I think this is a case of "Oh, my favorite rikishi lost" syndrome. Your favorite rikishi (one of my favorites too) lost in a disgraceful, childish way seldom ever seen before, going in scared shitless and coming out dazed and confused for so long it's not true.. Shameful. Don't blame the Yokozuna for Osh's being unprepared. This is Joi-land, not Makushita, and not the Bolshoi Ballet either. It isn't K-1, but still, it is a martial art where you can get pounded real bad, if you're careless enough.

But he will learn, and in two years-Ozeki, I stand by my guess.

Great sportsman, Osh. He attacked the furoba wall in the shitaku-beya. "Don't take my picture!! What the hell are you doing??", he shouted at a photographer. He refused to answer any questions. "I hope you got your picture. Your boss will be happy..", he added. His Japanese has certainly come a long way..

Nah, those are not the kind of things that enfuriated people about Asashoryu. In fact, Asashoryu seems to have learned most of his lessons and have acted pretty much as Yokozuna-like as could ever be asked for, for a year or so (although this is a question that always has the potential to flame up). Sumo is a tough sport and Kotooshu will have to learn as well. Also, most of the lessons Asashoryu has learned had less to do with sumo and more to do with all those things coming with the territory of being in sumo and being Yokozuna. Some of them which Kotooshu also has to learn (especially if he intends to become Ozeki and or Yokozuna, at least the first of which I still think he has the potential to achieve), such that being a bad loser is something to show with restraint. I feel this is an "I agree"-post with Nishinoshima and Kintamayama, but since I have been one of those most critical towards some of Asashoryu's behaviour, I feel I should speak up as well in a thread like this.

Yeah I guess, I still kind a like his straight energy and frustration projecting- hoping this would turn into becoming stronger.

i hope it was intentional. sumo is brutal. its meant to be. holding back is disrespectful. going 100% at your opponent is the way it is and should be.

also with kotooshu's arrogant little comment after the takamisakari fight its hard to feel sorry for him when the shoe is on the other foot

asashoryu could well say something similar about ooshu. "i'm not afraid of him. all he has is height"

Hear hear, (Sign of approval)

I totally agree with both statements. I was annoyed at him because of his arrogance regarding Takamisakari. That was just bully behaviour.

what goes around comes around...

you might as well be mad at Kaio for breaking elbows.

. . . or be mad at Chiyotaikai for always slapping people around. I wonder how much Kotooshu is thinking about today's match: I guess we'll all see how much additional punishment his injured face can take.

I haven't seen the comment by Kotooshu on Takamisakari, which day was it?

Also, what everyone's saying about Kotooshu's behaviour reminds me of what ShiroiKuma said about him, that he had changed. Seems that the proof is right there for everyone to see now, and not just him.

EDIT: Normal interview today it seemed though...

A lot, it seems. He manhandled Chiyotaikai quite well.

I agree, if you think his whack at Osh was bad, take a look at Asa's climb up the Makuuchi ranks. Some NASTY harite. In fact, that was one of the things I loved about him.
