Lucius Flavonius 0 Posted July 26, 2005 I often hear people shouting and yelling in support of their favourite wrestlers. Some of them happen to be children, but most are those of adults. Is there anyone to draw a sociological portrait of these shouters? Who are they? What is their background and etc?
Danjinoumi 10 Posted July 26, 2005 Well, the shouting you heard for Yotsukasa in Nagoya on Days 2 and 14 was probably coming from me. I'm just your average white foreigner. I'm pretty sure I qualify as an adult. Fat lot of good my cheering for Yotsukasa did though, as it looks like he'll be back in the Irumagawa toilet-cleaning brigade in September, or else veeeeery close. (Depressed...) aderechelsea 125 Posted July 26, 2005 when i go to a basho expect me to shout for my favourite wrestlers too ... and believe me ... if you try to make a sociological portrait on the guys (or gals) that shout in the various sport events you would just confuse yourself since it is the most variable mixture of people. if you attend sport events and participate in the shouting as well you will understand. Lucius Flavonius 0 Posted July 26, 2005 I meant those people who elicit shouts just before the tachi-ai.
Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted July 26, 2005 IIRC, this sort of thing was not uncommon in past times and different forms of entertainment in Japan, such as Kabuki theatre. Even now, dyed-in-the-wool fans shout out from the gallery at Kabuki for their favorite actor.
Sasanishiki 57 Posted July 26, 2005 I used to shout from the very back of the upper level at the Kokugikan when I was there. I was cheering for Wakanohana.
Hashira 0 Posted July 26, 2005 the yelling is often as interesting as the sumo, what with the middle-aged women screaming high-pitchedly and the otaku (nerds?) with their pages and pages of stats getting really excited about some match in Jonidan. There is no way to make a "portrait" of these people, as they all have different reasons: some personally know the rikishi, some like them, have the same hometown, think theyre hot, can read one rikishi's kanji and not the other, etc. and a few are drunk and just feel like yelling
Asashosakari 19,667 Posted July 26, 2005 (edited) My favorite shouters this basho were the ones yelling for Kobo on Day 5 (to be heard here at the very end of the clip), mainly because it was hilarious to hear that shout while his opponent was shown flat on the dohyo. Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted July 26, 2005 And the number one reason that fans shout in support of their favorite wrestler... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Survey Says- (they) are drunk and just feel like yelling <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Mark Buckton 1 Posted July 26, 2005 Nishi and I were yelling for the gyoji a while back - both drunk IIRC - but he'll tell you me more than him. Perhaps.
Mark Buckton 1 Posted July 26, 2005 (edited) Perhaps. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> no perhaps about it. you were hammered and yelling at the gyoji, yobidashi and even the shinpan. and if i recall correctly you were even shouting for taiho and umegatani. typical english hooligan. i on the other hand was the sterotypical irish fan happy to have a drink and cheer for anyone win or lose. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Umegatani II that is!!!!! :-D (Bleh!) (Applauding...) all in fun though - nowt curt about it IIRC Edited July 26, 2005 by Adachinoryu
Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted July 26, 2005 Yes Petr, I'm a kabuki fan. I'm occasionally lucky enough to score invites, and greatly enjoy those opportunities... As for drunken fans, I watched a little old man stand up during Takamisakari's shikiri and take a zabuton in each hand, imitating the rikishi's final routine by smacking himself all over with the cushions in unison with Robocop's antics... Shibouyama 1 Posted July 29, 2005 There was one guy this basho, though. I heard him in the background on the TV many times, different days. He was screaming his lungs out. Crazy. I was planning to ask people here about it, but didn't. Tell me, please, someone else heard that lunatic screaming. :-D
