Pick the Yusho Winners Aki'05

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a big problem on my home pc and am unable to update my game & I have no email right now so I cannot receive entries even if I did update my website and the entry form.

I am hoping to get my home computer fixed over the next week but if it is fixable it will be only at the last minute. Therefore, I need to announce now that I AM NOT ABLE to run PTYW this basho! Perhaps with luck I will be up and running the day before the tournament starts, but I really don't know. I could be without a computer for much longer...

Regretfully,

Oshirokita, from the Great White North

Good luck getting your system running.

I look forward to competing next time you are able to run the game.

I'd offer to run it myself if I had the time and knowhow - but I don't!

This notice will save me the time I would've spent researching the two Lowest divisions to extract potential yusho winners there. I still nned to look at Sandanme for the Banzuke surfing game and Makushita for ... you know.

Thanks for the early notice.

Since I've occasionally tracked the results on my own anyway, and it didn't seem too complicated, I guess I could offer to run it this basho, if Oshirokita were to agree to that...

Ok, I am going to hedge my bets here, just in case this game gets off the ground in some fashion. Here are my choices:

Sanyaku - Asashoryu

Maegashira - Iwakiyama

Juryo - Shiraishi

Upper Makushita - Nodera

Lower Makushita - Sawai

Sandanme - Minaminoshima

Jonidan - Chiyonishiki

Jonokuchi - Ishii

Here's hoping Oshirokita's computer gets well soon!

Just as a note of caution, I haven't actually heard anything from Oshirokita yet, and I'm not planning to run the game unless I have his approval since I don't want to intrude on anything here (he may prefer to just not have the game running in his absence).

Hi again! Just using the office computer after work to check in (shouldn't do this too often though). I passed my PC to a friend yesterday and he will try to fix it. I expect all my data will be recoverable. Thanks to those who offered server space but I foolishly did not make back up disks of my webpages so I am not yet able to update the game. This will be fixed! (eventually)

If Asashosakari wants to run the game this basho then by all means please go ahead. If so, then thanks a million.

I reserve the right to calculate final Win/Loss dividing lines and any banzuke making. Since such a late start will likely have fewer players, perhaps we can have an "unofficial" running of the game, with my blessing. Any players who make an entry will be counted (even entries to my email -- which still works but is inaccessible right now) and promoted if they meet scoring requirements for promotion. It might be worthwhile to allow late entries up until the end of Day 2 this one time (if my computer does get fixed by Sunday, I probably would make this concession) but I leave that choice to Asashosakari if he wants to take control this basho. All players who don't enter will receive an automatic kosho (regardless of any conflicting rules). Because of my pc problems I have not sent any message to the Sumo ML to advise that the game is (or is not) running (also as the entry form page has not been updated, the Drone's defaults have not been recalculated, but that is pretty simple). Most (but not all) players are also SumoForum members. If my computer is alive by the weekend I can take over scoring etc, if Asashosakari wants to organize receiving entries somehow. Having entries received as forum posts is okay I guess but does expose your (hopefully excellent) picks to players who enter later.

Here we go, then...

Please email your picks to pickyusho@gmx.net - deadline's 6am JST on shonichi as usual, but as per Oshirokita, I'll try to be lenient with slightly late entries.

For now, let's hope that Oshirokita gets back up and running quickly (good luck!) so that my helper stint is finished after collecting the picks and the rightful gamemaster can take over. We'll see, I guess. (Lifting weights...)

Here's the new Drone entry:

Sanyaku: Asashoryu

Maegashira: Tokitsuumi

Juryo: Harunoyama

Makushita 1-15: Nakao

Makushita 16-60: Sawai

Sandanme: Nakanishi

Jonidan: Takahashi

Jonokuchi: Kotokuroda

Edit: I wonder what made me write "6am JST as usual"...I just saw on Oshirokita's website (which is, incidentally, http://members.shaw.ca/oshirokita/PTYWgame.htm) that his usual deadline is 12 noon JST, so I'll honor that one, of course. Shouldn't make a difference though since we're going to be lenient anyway. :-)

29 participants this basho, plus the drone...about 10 less than normally, so I guess some players didn't see the announcements after all. Here are the selection stats (drone picks in capital letters):

Sanyaku: Amidst a sea of Asashoryu picks (as usual), we have one lone Futeno pick.

Aha! My pc is now fixed and a new security system installed. I just need to wade through 500 emails and I will be all set. I ought to have results for this game up after Day 8 once I check any email entries I received along with those sent to Asashosakari. (And thanks again)

Welcome back Oshirokita!

I'm sure you have more important things to fix but is your web site for this game going to be running this tournament?

Many divisions are heavily weighted towards the most popular pick so I worry that there will be a lot of identical teams out there.

No, at least among the picks I received there were no completely identical teams. Some are quite similar of course (Doitsuyama's and Azumaryu's each differ from mine in only one position, for instance), but that's not very unusual, I think.

Before I'm passing the game back to Oshirokita once he's caught up on his mail and other stuff, here are the standings after Day 6. Below you'll find just the overall score for each player (the full table's too big for the forum layout); for the complete standings, go to http://dl6.rapidshare.de/files/5167883/104...TYW_Aki2005.htm (let's see if that works...you'll have to click on the "FREE" button at the bottom, and then click the download link that appears)

Thanks again to Asashosakari for shepherding this game while I had my pc meltdown. I am glad this game was able to continue and most of the regular players were able to get an entry in. I am up and running again and will be updating all my webpages shortly. For now, I have the standings up at their usual spot (including a few more entries which I retrieved from my email).

One player has now clinched the yusho for the game.

Congratulations to Yubiquitoyama!

Yes, this game once again is my main reason to cheer, after this terrible senshuraku for me in most other games...

Thanks to Asashosakari and Oshirokita for making it possible to play this basho despite computer problems! (Applauding...)

The final results are now up, with the widest spread of scores to date.

Congratulations again to yusho winner Yubiquitoyama. At the end of last basho I promised a prize to the winner. If Yubi-zeki wants to forward his snailmail address to me, a pair of commemorative drink coasters from the Sumo Canada Basho held in Vancouver in 1998 will be yours.

The Kyushu banzuke for the game will be up soon.

Azumaryu once again has the highest score among Makuuchi players and deservedly receives promotion to Ozeki!

A sneak peek at the sanyaku:

Sekiwake = Flohru, Kintamayama & Asashosakari

Komusubi = Doitsuyama, Oshirokita, Itachi & Kashunowaka

With 8 players now ranked above Maegashira for Kyushu '05, new scoring will begin next basho for the Makuuchi division to minimize a potentially top-heavy banzuke. Only one half of Makuuchi players will be given kachi koshi; the other divisions will continue to score as usual.

Thanks to everyone who played this basho and especially Asashosakari for helping run the show. See you again next basho, better than ever.

I will do my best to be worthy of that honour in the coming basho...

Now time to celebrate! (Applauding...) (You are going off-topic...)
