Dale 0 Posted October 4, 2005 After reading the "Kotooshu wins All Japan Rikishi Championship" thread, I'm curious. The US audience isn't generally very well educated about the current happenings in Japan. But they will love Robocop. I'm thinking a win by Takamisakari (or a final day loss to Asashoryu) isn't out of the question :) Any budding scriptwriters out there who want to suggest how things will go? Mark Buckton 1 Posted October 4, 2005 you know, while I hope those fans going have a good time watching the blokes perform and seeing it for what it is, I think the real answer to the question / topic title is - 'who cares?'
Asashosakari 19,320 Posted October 4, 2005 (edited) somebody like kotooshu to win one day and asashoryu to win the other day with asashoryu winning in a playoff.or is it three days? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, it's supposed to be three daily champions. I agree that Osh and Asashoryu are good bets for two of the spots...probably Shoryu on day 2, because day 1 is a little too obvious and day 3 isn't appropriate for a Yokozuna because it looks like a come-from-behind win. (Spooky TV program...) As for the third guy...I would guess Tochiazuma, just because there really needs to be one Japanese winner. And Asashoryu's probably going to win the overall thing, I agree. I wouldn't be shocked to see Takamisakari reach one of the daily finals (perhaps the one against Osh), but anything more than that is probably out of the question. His wacky act may be special in Japan, but not nearly so much in Las Vegas. you know, while I hope those fans going have a good time watching the blokes perform and seeing it for what it is, I think the real answer to the question / topic title is - 'who cares?' <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's a pro-wrestling thing. (Whistling...) Predicting the winners of fixed bouts can be just as interesting as doing it for real competitions, although the dynamics are obviously completely different. Odoriou 0 Posted October 4, 2005 Kotonowaka wasn't mentioned yet... I guess the US crowd will also cheer on the oldest rikishi in one of his last tournaments. So I'm expecting Kotonowaka in one of the daily finals, too. (Spooky TV program...) Besides they could try to build up Roho as the big, bad and scary Russian with bad manners who is using barely legal techniques, insulting the audience and so on. In the final bout that ugly rowdy would of course be beaten by Mr. Niceguy Asashoryu under deafening applause... (Whistling...)
sekitori 492 Posted October 4, 2005 oh and if you find a bookie who doesn't know and has a book open.............put every penny you own on the yokozuna <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just try to make a bet with one of the sports books in Las Vegas. They'll politely say they don't cover bets on sumo exhibitions and after you leave, they'll break up with laughter. (Spooky TV program...) On the other hand, you can bet on just about anything in Vegas, so you never know. Since this is only an exhibition, I really don't care who wins. I've only seen live sumo once before when they were here in Los Angeles over twenty years ago and I look forward to seeing it again in Las Vegas. At that time the exhibition was held at Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus. Now it's being held at Mandalay Bay. From a university to the gambling capital of the world in twenty years. Times have changed. (Whistling...) Since someone has to "win", I agree that it will be Asashoryu. I think the NSK would want their very best to come out on top in a basho held in such a famous place. Jonosuke 28 Posted October 5, 2005 As they say when the chips are down, the house usually wins and in this case, the house of Shoryu..I imagine by now they are in Vegas...anyone there yet?.
Naifuzan 1 Posted October 5, 2005 also i'm thinking asashoryu wouldn't be so happy about someone else being the champion overseas. he won korea and china last year from what i recall. its a matter of protocol. he is the yokozuna <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Didn't taikai win one?
