Some people are showing disinterest in the Tamanoi blog, saying that the thread is too long, and that it should be ended. Others are saying that they want it to keep going. I figured this would be a good place to get a tally of how many people like or dislike the translations.

The fact that some people would show disinterest in some thread is never a reason to even consider closing the thread in my opinion. Every thread is boring and every thread in interesting. Well not every thread is interesting if it says "lol" and nothing else but you know what I mean. Besides even Ichinoya watch has been on for a long time on ML and I am sure many delete it without second thoughts because many don't care if he lost to jonidan rikishi X with tsukiotoshi when he was 2-4 at Jd45 before his last bout (Whistling...).

These bloq translations by Madorosumaru and Jonosuke are very unique threads with a lot of translation work. Without their work, non-Japanese speaking sumofans would not even know there exists such threads. Even if there wouldn't be more than one avid reader of those bloq translations, they would serve a purpose.

Seriously, I didn't know that we're doing a popularity contest here. I'll go and delete about 2200 of my posts, now that I realize the limited audience they probably attracted means I shouldn't have posted them in the first place. (Whistling...)

I admit that the poll is a thinly veiled attempt by myself to start a post to show the translators appreciation. I love the blog translations and I think I speak for many when I say that it really brings us closer to the whole sumo world, both behind the scenes and up front.

I really enjoy them, but I don't always read them. That is the great thing about the Forum. You don't have to read what you don't want to. When I am in the mood and I see there is a new post, I usually have a quick look. If I don't want to then it is always there for later.

My appreciation also goes to the translators of these blogs (and of all articles). (Whistling...) (Annoyed...) I have translated a few articles over my time here and I know that it always takes longer than you think. It might be because coming up with the right expressions to convey the meaning can be difficult, or just because I am out of practice. However, having done it only sporadically I have grreat respect for the volumes they translate every week.

actually is there some way to correct that?

when i look at the main page i might see that there is an unread post in "amateur sumo" the "In" and "By" though will often not be thread that is unread as its just the last post full stop

basically what i think i mean is i would like to see a "mark all posts as read button" for individual forums and not the entire site.

Try "view new posts" at the top. All new posts since you last read will appear. After you're done , click "Mark all forums as read and return to index" and you're ready for the next batch.

I agree with this. Not only does the translation read smoothly, but Tooyama's personality really comes across, which is evidence of elegance in the translation.

Already there, just have a look.

Inside each subforum there's a button "Forum Options" at top-right. Click it and You'll find "Mark forum as read and return".

OTOH, I don't have any slowdown issues since the upgrade. Seems to be an individual problem.

Tons of mail to read as I was down due to a hard disk crash but I wanted to put my two cents in for this more than any other thread.

I really feel Mado san really does a great job - it's always consistent and well done unlike quick and dirty jobs I often do irregularly, you can really depend on his work (not only just the blog but others as well as he does provide a good follow-up on many threads he starts).

If this is any other major pro sports like baseball or football, you will be probably paying for the information provided by guys like Mado san and Moti like I pay for Sporting New Fantasy Baseball.

They are tirelessly seeking new and interesting stories for us. With them around we are getting as good if not better information as sumo fans in Japan.

One person can really make a significant difference. A former (maybe still) member of the Mailing List, Lilllian Fujimori singlehandedly translated Kirishima's book into French. She set up a web site for him and Michinoku Beya. I have no doubt that the major reason Kirishima is so well regarded and known in France is due to her efforts alone.

It's amazing to realize that she wasn't born in Japan nor grew up there to understand so much of intrinsic Japanese values. Unfortunately I don't understand enough French to read most of her work but she is one person in sumo community I truly admire and hope to meet one day.

Incidentally, it's also possible to "mark as read" an entire subforum right from the main page by clicking on the dark-blue IPB button next to the subforum name.

I appreciate the blog translations a lot. I always say that for us, non-japanese readers, a peek into what else is going on with the rikishi is always interesting.
