Asa in Kyushu

Asashoryu, after being in Mongolia for a few days, was happy to be able to return home today to spend time with Little Dorj, before taking off again (also today) for Kyushu ---to fulfill his yokozuna-ish obligations and begin his intensive training for the last basho of the year.

He had dinner with ex-Yokozuna Wajima on the 22nd, a day before the Ishikawa, Kanazawa jungyo began. They have the same number of yushos (14). "I didn't have to explicitly tell him-it goes without saying- he'll get his 15th, no doubt about it!!", said Wajima to the press. It was reported that before Asashouryuu donned his golden mawashi last Haru-basho, he called Wajima up and asked if it was OK by him, noting that they have a good relationship going.

Asashouryuu showed up on day one of the Ishikawa jungyo wearing the gold mawashi. He didn't do any keiko because of a "Kintamayama" (a pain in the neck), but did participate in the afternoon torikumi.

"I have spoken to Wajima a number of times and promised him I will gambarize and get my 7th straight yusho!", said the Yokozuna.

Asashouryuu had 15 bouts with Futenou and Hakuhou and others and went 13-2. "Since we are nearing the Kyushu basho, I better start gearing up!", he said. He was seen "lending his chest" to Takekaze and showing Hakuhou how to use his head at the tach-ai, literally, and generally showing the leadership expected of him. Then he signed many autographs for youngsters. "We have to help kids fulfill their dreams", he said.

No training for Asa today. he has a light cold, and since the jungyo is now in a mountanous cooler area, he isn't taking any chances. He did , however, do the dohyo-iri and had his afternoon bout. The jungyo is 8 days old , not bad considering the waning interest we constantly hear about. "I hope this brings in more fans", said the Yokozuna.

well I visited the jungyo in Toyooka this week and the training session

in the morning was quite interesting. But I did not see the Yokozuna give

any autogramms that day, anyway he refused to give me one, which I didnt

find so great of him. (Eek...)

Your complaining? (In a state of confusion...) ;-)

Asashouryuu returned to asageiko after 4 days of rest on the final day of the Aki jungyo. He was wild with enthusiasm. He had 10 bouts, no results given, but he was looking good. He even tsuriotoshi-ed Kasugaou three straight times. " Three straight!! Didja see that?? I've gotta bring my physical condition up to par by doing keiko, huh??", said an enthusiastic Yokozuna. Immediately after the keiko, he returned to Tokyo to see his newborn son and family, and will leave for Kyushu today.
