Jonosuke 28 Posted January 13, 2006 (edited) Japan's professional baseball club, Hanshin Tigers, say they will be checking closely to find out if Moukonami's Kesho mawashi violate their registered team logo. Moukonami received the new kesho mawashi based on his shikona "Mouko" meaning "Ferocious Tiger", also the nickname of Hanshin Tigers. Tatsunami oyakata maintains there is sufficient difference between the two - for instance, the color of the face and the face is turning to a different direction. Well, you will be the judge (left - Moukonami's kesho mawashi; right - Hanshin Tigers team logo): Edited January 13, 2006 by Jonosuke

Gusoyama 103 Posted January 13, 2006 definitely a rip off. But maybe he can come to an accord with the team, let them use him for free advertising.
sekihiryu 51 Posted January 13, 2006 (edited) looks very yellow in this picture compared to the first. looks like a mirror image with a few detail changes on the stripes of the tiger Edited January 13, 2006 by sekihiryu
Zuikakuyama 1 Posted January 13, 2006 The two keshos (in the first pic and the last) are actually different, with different stripe patterns.

Coo-cook 0 Posted January 13, 2006 Shamelessly pilfered, I'd say. Sue him! Sue whom ? Him, his oyokata or his supporters ? I agree. It's clearly a shameless violation of copy (logo) rights (or how you call it) me think.
Kintamayama 45,109 Posted January 13, 2006 (edited) "I'm a big Hanshin fan, so that's why I wear it. I'd like to make the players happy.", explained Moukonami, after learning that his kesho has caused a mini-scandal. He wore it in today's Juryo dohyo-iri. He has three of them, and uses them alternately. They were given to him by his support group. "If he is using it with us in mind, he should have told us about it.. If he would get a yusho and boost our image, it could be mutually lucrative, but still, you can't go around using it just like that. We should reach some sort of arrangement..", said the Hanshin Tigers President. I think it's safe to say it will all pan out in the end, copyright infringement..yes...here it comes... notwithstanding. madorosumaru 7 Posted January 26, 2006 He has three of them ... Here's the kesho-mawashi he used on Nakabi....looks like it's sponsored by that same "kesho" company as Asa's Yep, it's from Yoji-ya (よーじや) in Kyoto. The one with the controversial tiger is from the Osaka koenkai and the third is from a chicken restaurant in Osaka that has a design that is poultry in motion, I presume. According to the same article in Sumo mag, Homasho was to receive five kesho mawashi. One from his hometown, one from his alma mater Saitaima Sakae High, and one each from three heya koenkai in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. The other Hatsu Basho shin-juryo, Satoyama, was expecting at least three--one each from alma mater Nichidai and Kagoshima Commerical High and a third from his hometown. The design on the mawashi from Nichidai and Kagoshima Comm High will be their respective school emblems.
madorosumaru 7 Posted February 2, 2006 Conflict Resolved, Everyone is Happy! After much "behind the scene" negotiations, the Hanshin Tigers approved the usage of a kesho mawashi that they felt infringed upon their trademark feline image. Once it was clearly established that that the purported image-usurper, Mokonami, was indeed a devoted Tigers' fan and that his and his backers' intentions were totally honorable, the Hanshin management gave their heart-felt consent for the young rikishi to wear a mawashi bearing not only the likeness of their ferocious tiger icon but also their "sacrosanct" team name. Granted this most rare and treasured privilege, the koenkai will present Mokonami with a brand new kesho mawashi, officially sanctioned by the venerable Hanshin Tigers Baseball Club. The mawashi should be ready for public display by the start of Haru Basho (March 12).
Coo-cook 0 Posted February 3, 2006 It would've been great if there are "sony", "toyota" and "suntory" mawashis and rikishis and their stables get paid for it. These type of commercials may boost the sumo salaries and accordingly competition and interest.

I hope that Mokonami will not succumb to it.

Bishonohana 0 Posted February 6, 2006 The mawashi should be ready for public display by the start of Haru Basho (March 12). Do you know if this one will look exactly like the Hanshin Tiger logo? I really didn't think they should have made this much fuss over a tiger on his mawashi that wasn't EXACTLY the same as the Hanshin. (Annoyed...) In a positive light, Moukonami and the Hanshin folks got some publicity out of it anyway... (Chucking salt...) Plus a new mawashi for Moukonami!! (A sekitori...) (In a state of confusion...) BTW, Lucius, I LOVE your Avatar!! (Heart)
Jonosuke 28 Posted February 6, 2006 Sometimes making a kesho mawashi takes as much as several months but I am sure they are trying to get the new mawashi sanctioned by the Hanshin Tigers with its logo and the team name listed as quickly as possible, as it's a free advertizement for them (they don't even have to pay for a Kensho banner and unlike a kensho banner, NHK does a close up shot of him coming up on the dohyo when they do the dohyo-iri). The basho is at Osaka and the Japanese baseball season will be starting only a week or so away after the Haru Basho, so what more can they ask for? Incidentally anyone can make a kesho mawashi for a rikishi (though you can't force them to wear it), I know Tochiazuma has two given to him by an individual - one by a baseball manager Hoshino who is a good friend of his father and a well known singer "Yumin" Matsutoya. In a positive light, Moukonami and the Hanshin folks got some publicity out of it anyway... Plus a new mawashi for Moukonami!! If you'd recognized the "tone" of my post, I thought that the Hanshin management was being rather anally constricted in complaining about the kesho mawashi. They would have derived plenty of positive exposure as it was with the original mawashi, but they wanted official recognition. So, they bellyached, "We would have said okay if he only had asked for permission . . ." I don't know if Mokonami is going to get a brand new kesho mawashi or, due to the time constriction (there's that word again), just an altered one with the team name included. Those mawashi cost a bundle.
Kintamayama 45,109 Posted March 9, 2006 (edited) Well, here are the two keshos, old and new, in their colorful splendor, or, colourful splendour, if you lean that way: (The one on the left is the one sanctioned by the Tigers Association) Questions: What is the third light-blue mawashi? What is Moukonami hiding in his fist? Is that an Ichinoya watch he is showing off? Can you find the boxer in this picture? Fujisan 533 Posted March 9, 2006 Well, here are the two keshos, old and new, in their colorful splendor, or, colourful splendour, if you lean that way: (The one on the left is the one sanctioned by the Tigers Association) "There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that Rolex are suing Moukonami for wearing a watch with their logo on without their permision." Personally I think he has a roll of coins in his fist for when he meets the Hanshin Tigers representative.

What is Moukonami hiding in his fist? Is that an Ichinoya watch he is showing off? Can you find the boxer in this picture? The mawasi from Yoji-ya. AKA the "light-blue" mawashi. FWIW: According to Sponichi, The Tatsunami Osaka Koenkai paid in the neighborhood of 2 million yen for the new kesho mawashi. Yeah, the Hanshin representative deserves a "knuckle sandwich" with "a roll of coin in [the] fist."
madorosumaru 7 Posted March 28, 2006 (edited) Mokonami and Tatsunami Oyakata visited the Hanshin Tigers office to pay their respects. They brought with them the sacrosanct kesho-mawashi, which was approved by Hanshin after much ado. Mokonami wore the mawashi during Haru Basho, where he compiled a 9-6 record. The young rikishi pledged that he would continue to do his best to be as successful as the Hanshin Tigers baseball team. "When I become stronger, I'd like to have an [official] Tigers team jacket," he said excitedly, "It would also be neat to one day throw out the first ball." The anally-constricted team president was characteristically non-committal about the "first-ball" request, but he did manage to compliment the mawashi as having "the kind of [fearsome] impact that can't be matched by any other team's logo." That, I guess, is like congratulating one's new son-in-law by saying, "Your wife is so beautiful and well-bred." The youthfully exuberant Mokonami promised to return for another visit next year AFTER his makuuchi yusho at Osaka Basho.
