World - V

Recommended Posts

In Japanese "world" is "sekai" which writes with two kanjis

se ( JIS4024 ) + kai ( JIS3326). Japan imported immense scales and qualities

of cultures -letters, literatures, philosophies, etc - from China, and kanji is one

of them. Each kanji has its own meaning, and especially for this case, when

the word "sekai" is originated in Buddhist concepts.

In one Buddhist picture, "se" here means the past, present, and future.

And "kai" means every direction -south, north, east, and west.

So sekai ( se+kai ) represents one vast concept of time and space where

any being would ever exist.

So interesting is that Finnish ( and possibly its relative

languages ) has truly substantial appreciations for the real

while our "sekai"vision is based upon metaphysical idolum.....

In Hebrew it's Olam, which is just a word. No double meaning, just olam, which means world.

Over and out.

I thought it also meant 'forever' or 'a rather long period of time from now'? Or is that le'olam?

Olam is world. Le'olam means forever. Me'olam means never. Mar olam means Mr. world. Met haolam means the end of the world, or"can it get worse/better than this?"

Actually, the OED suggests that "world" in English comes from wer- + ald (actually not ending with a d), meaning the age (ald) of man (wer). Originally, the word meant the human world, rather than the physical one (although the two were often believed to be coincident, of course).

The Romanian word for world is "lume," which sounds like it should come from "light," but I don't know if it actually does.

Oops, so it does. (Punk rocker...) 'Ver' is 'man' in Old Norse. 'Sea' comes in at some later point.

Well, 'lumen' is 'light' in Latin, and Romanian being a member of the Romance language family - might be. Forgive my ignorance, do Romania and Hungary share some ancient part of history together, seeing that they somehow have the same concept behind the word? :-D (Where's the 'thinking hard' smiley when you need one...)

I see. Thank you for this quick Hebrew lesson. (Eh?)

Yes, in exotic languages such as Swedish you can for example learn beatiful words like "skatterevision" and "reall

For some reason the script has leaked HTML code into Exil's last message which makes it unquotable. I'll look into it. Meanwhile, the deep thinking emoticon is now available. (Blowing up furiously...)

Update: The same happens with his earlier message. It might have something to do with quoting from two earlier messages.

What happens? I don't see anything wrong with Exil's post or Yoavoshimaru's quote of it.

There's nothing wrong in them as such but you can't successfully quote Exil's messages as the rest of the page's HTML code is sucked into the text entry box. :-)
