madorosumaru 7 Posted March 23, 2006 (edited) Tamarikido, The Indomitable One There are a total of 72 [sic] sekitori on the Haru Basho banzuke. The lowest rank among them is West Juryo 14-mai. Occupying that slot is Tamarikido, who due to various injuries fell to the depth of Sandanme 80-mai and then spent a year and a half to crawl up 140 rungs on the banzuke to sekitorihood. Kintamayama 45,512 Posted March 23, 2006 (edited) Tamarikido, The Indomitable OneThus began a dedicated regimen to build up his lower body. The image of Tamarikido pulling a heavy rubber tube around an empty lot adjacent to the heya lodgings where Tamaotori was celebrating his shin-nyumaku last Nagoya, is still vivid in my mind. That is of course Tamaasuka.. Edited March 23, 2006 by Kintamayama
Asashosakari 19,648 Posted March 23, 2006 (edited) There are a total of 72 sekitori on the Haru Basho banzuke. Man, they've been hiding two from us! Seriously, many thanks for the translation. Glad to read something about this rather invisible rikishi. ;-) Edit: One nitpick... This “Indomitable Rikishi,” who experienced the deepest drop of any former makuuchi rikishi He's "only" experienced the lowest drop of those who actually made it back to Juryo; others fell deeper, never to be seen again. (Towanoyama being the latest example.) Edited March 23, 2006 by Asashosakari

Itachi 396 Posted March 24, 2006 Now that I got my petty nitpicking out of the way, I will confess that I've followed Tamarikido's long climb back to sekitoridom. To me it seemed like he was getting good enough to survive in Makuuchi and I was glad to see him there back in 2004 (or whenever it really was). When he got injured and dropped like a stone, I hoped for him to recover fully so that he could return to Makuuchi and finish what he started there. Now I'm not sure if he has enough to get back there and stick anymore but Gojoro did a similar thing in the past as did Wakanoyama. Now the next returning sekitori I'm waiting for is Towanoyama but I fear he may have been unable to restore himself fully enough to make it back.
