Makushita Game Nagoya 2006

Recommended Posts

Welcome to another round of the Makushita Game!

Feel free to participate, there's still lots of space in Makuuchi division.

The deadline is shonichi 8 AM JST.

==================================

Here are the rules in short form:

1) Slice the Makushita banzuke into 15 equal brackets (ms1-ms4, ms5-ms8 etc.).

2) Pick one rikishi from each bracket.

3) Send your selection to me via e-mail (can be accessed here).

4) Done.

Here are some rules for the rule-minded:

1) You collect win points for your picked rikishi, and these win points will be converted into a win-loss record. If a rikishi gets 4 wins in a basho, this will give 0.5 win point to a player's tally. Every additional win of a rikishi adds another 0.5 win point, so a 7-0 rikishi will net 2 win points. The sum total of win points across 15 rikishi is the win-loss record for a player (if necesseary it will be rounded up or down based on banzuke requirements).

2) The player with the most win points gets the yusho. In case of a tie, brackets will be compared pair-wise (in descending order down the banzuke) until a winner can be determined.

3) Sansho prizes are awarded as follows (all sansho require a KK):

3a) Shukun-sho for the player who picked the yusho winner. In case of a tie, other 7-0 rikishi will be compared, followed by 6-1 rikishi in descending order etc., until a winner can be determined.

3b) Kanto-sho for the player whose rikishi have netted the most wins.

3c) Gino-sho: for the player with the most unusual picks - total sum of (wins of a rikishi divided by number of players who picked him).

4) If a player cannot participate in a basho, this will be counted as a 7-8 record (no kosho application necessary). The second consecutive kyujo basho will be counted as 0-0-15, and the third kyujo in a row leads to the retirement of the player.

5) Kyujo rikishi: in all likelihood players will be informed about kyujo rikishi once they are announced. Players can change their picks accordingly. Because there is little time between kyujo announcements and the start of the basho, players are allowed to replace a kyujo rikishi with a 0-0 rikishi or 0-1 rikishi until day 2 of the basho (8 AM JST).

6) Promotions (these rules might change):

6a) Guaranteed promotion to komusubi: 9-6 for M1, 10-5 for M2, 11-4 for M3, etc.

6b) Guaranteed promotion to sekiwake: 9-6 for Ke, 10-5 for Kw, 11-4 for M1, 12-3 for M2, 13-2 for M3 etc.

6c) Ozeki promotion requirements: three double-digit KK in a row; Sekiwake rank at the crucial third basho; 34 wins from three basho in case of a shin-Sekiwake (33 wins for an experienced Sekiwake).

6d) Yokozuna promotion: Two consecutive yusho and overall good manners.

I'm just wondering how many have their picks in for the Makushita Game so far? There are 35 on the banzuke - how many kyujo? I wouldn't be surprised if July was the weakest month for participation.

I've only got 2 entries for my new Sandanme game (and 1 is mine!). I thought more than 2 of 35 Makushita followers would try a Sandanme version - is everyone waiting until the last day to see who is kyujo? Is the concept of a Sandanme game just too absurd?

Don't be shy, don't be afraid, don't hesitate, humour me and send me your list of 15 Sandanme rikishi (but only after Randomitsuki has your list of 15 Makushita guys). See the Sandanme Game post (as you have 55 times so far) for further details.

Thanks again to Randomitsuki for organizing this game and for inspiring me to go ahead with the Sandanme game. Don't worry, I have no plans to push for a Jonidan game (too many rikishi and too few destined for greater things).

Think the game is a good idea, you put more attention to the young guys and perhaps you pick the upcoming Yokuzuna (Nodding yes...).

(Koki still in Jonidan .... (Help me...) )

This is to inform you that I might be off-computer for most part of tomorrow. In other words, it is highly likely that I can neither confirm picks nor can warn about kyujo. Please check for kyujo by yourselves.

Currently I have received 28 entries. If you're not on the list, it's time to send in your picks.

Asashosakari; Chiyonohana; Doitsuyama; Fay; Flohru; Heikotoriki; Holleshoryu; Imumaru; Itachi; Kintamayama; Kotononami; Meyeryu; Oshirokita; Profomisakari; Randomitsuki; Sakana; sekihiryu; Shiyonofuji; Susanoo; Takamueda; Takanorappa; Tamanaogijima; Tameiki; Tomoe; Torideyama; Yubiquitoyama; Zenjimoto; Zeokage

Standings after day 6:

Shimoda, Wakanoho, Nakanishiki, Ikioi. Those four poster boys are currently at 1-2 which hurts overall standings quite considerably. Asashosakari is the only player who has crossed the KK line thus far. If he can keep the momentum, he might finish with double digits that could lead to another Ozeki run come September.

Four players are tied for second place now.

kanto-sho: Kintamayama with 69 wins across the board.

I can understand why I picked Towanoyama (3-1) over Nakano (4-0) but I can't figure out why I liked Maikaze (2-2) better than Shiraishi (4-0).

I knew something was wrong when I wasn't mentioned for the most average pick award...

Standings after day 10:

Sekiwake Asashosakari regained the lead. Chiyonohana and Kintamayama have also arrived in double digits. Itachi and Takamueda are the only sanyaku players currently on the wrong side of koshi. But with five more days of action this is likely to change.

Standings after day 13:

For the first time it looks as if results will be rounded down. This should give those players with 7.5 points an extra boost. Only with 8 points you are guaranteed of the kachi-koshi.

The yusho is not decided yet. Asashosakari has a comfortable lead over Kintamayama. While Kintama must hope for wins by Kageyama, Chiyotenzan (tomorrow), Tooyama, and Shibuya, Asashosakari's hopes to defend his position in the standings rests on Maeta (tomorrow), Chiyohakuho, and Isobe (tomorrow).

Standings after day 14:

Congratulations to Asashosakari for winning back-to-back yushos! That's incredible. (Poking the other guy...).

Kintamayama and Randomitsuki are tied for second place now.

The sansho aren't decided yet. Currently, Yubiquitoyama leads the shukun-sho standings, but if Kageyama wins his bout tomorrow, the shukun-sho will go to Kintamayama.

In kanto-sho standings Kintamayama has a very slight chance of pulling equal with Asashosakari.

And the gino-sho is still up for grabs, with Yubiquitoyama and Oshirokita being the main contenders.

Some promotion talk:

According to the rules of the game Asashosakari will need another double-digit record in Aki Basho. However, given his two consecutive yusho the Makushita Game Kyokai might discuss a promotion even in case of a 9-6.

Other Ozeki candidates in Aki Basho will be Chiyonohana and Randomitsuki. But the bar will be much higher for them (13-2 for Chiyonohana, 12-3 for Randomitsuki according to the current standings).

Some banzuke talk:

The banzuke making could be a nightmarish affair. It seems that for half of the players Makushita Game is too easy, and for the other half it is too difficult. It looks pretty much as if 90% of players in the upper banzuke half will get a kachi-koshi, whereas 90% of the players in the lower banzuke half will get a make-koshi. As a consequence, we might have a huge gap in the next banzuke, so watch out for some spectacularly small demotions, and some spectacularly huge promotions.

Congratulations to Asashosakari for winning back-to-back yushos! That's incredible. (Poking the other guy...).

Woohoo! (Applauding...)

Now, onto another 7-8 record just like in Haru when I bungled my first Ozeki run (also after a yusho, no less)...

Congratulations Asasho-zeki!

Thanks for running the game Randomitsuki!

It looks like there will be an overabundance of Sekiwake.

I would feel comfortable seeing Asashosakari promoted on the strength of his back to back yusho - if only to make room in lower sanyaku for all of us Sekiwake.

It must be tempting to give slight demotions to 8-7 sanyaku just to get the best ones up front. Even with 9-6, I feel that I could be moved down to S2 with Randomitsuki and Asasho passing me.

Well, I'm not a banzuke mechanic so I'll leave it to the specialists. I look forward to seeing the results.

On a different note...Randomitsuki, based on this exchange from last year, I suppose the test basho (Nagoya last year) was in fact rescored as Doitsuyama suggested? If so, did you ever post the rescored results anywhere? I can't find 'em...

Edit: Alright, I've found part of the results, but since I'm not in there, I'm still interested. (In jonokuchi...)
